Rivals Isn't the Only One That Sometimes MissesJarrett Dilliard story at www.texasfootball.com mentions that SMU under Phil Bennett was one of the schools that wanted Dilliard to walk on. Only scholarship offer was wishbone running Ken Hatfield. Just last week Tulsa All-Conference LB Nelson Coleman mentioned that SMU was interested but failed to offer Coleman. Those constantly taking shots at Rivals ought to acknowledge that every coach misses too. Phil Bennett didn't think at least 2 All-CUSA First Team players were even good enough to get a scholarship to SMU. Would have loved to have seen Sanders and Dilliard on the same team.
That article is from the San Antonio article I linked to earlier. Dillard had a B-Ball offer to Colgate but he wanted to play football. Only Rice offered TWO days before signing day. Bennett kind of suggested that Dillard couldn't have gone to SMU. I guess he wasn't expecting Dillard's dad to be quoted in the paper the same day saying SMU was hoping he would walk on.
Actually, Coach Bennett said the week before the SMU/Tulsa game that he recruited Coleman hard, and that he had an offer for Coleman -- I think it was one of those things where he had a handful of players offered and just a couple of spots left. After he had filled his last scholarship, he said he talked with Coleman and informed him that he no longer had a scholarship to offer. He then said that after the game between SMU and Tulsa in a year or two ago, Coleman approached him and said "do you remember me?" Coach congratulated him on his performance and Tulsa's win, and said he "doesn't forget a guy who has 15 tackles against us." Coach didn't miss Coleman. He had him on his list of players to recruit, and simply ran out of room in the class after other guys claimed the scholarships. Happens to every coach, all the time (as you said).
No idea what happened with SMU and Dillard. I'll assume your description of SMU's desire that he walk on is accurate. We're just like every other school in the country, that had other players as priorities. Dillard has exceeded every expectation had for him, and that probably includes his high school coach and his family. Oops. Go PONIES!
Candystipe it any way you want-Bennett missed on Coleman and Dilliard. Hell I'm serious Mack Brown could have signed 65% of the Top 100 this year if he had enough scholarships. He's paid to guess right. And Blog what makes you so certain that Bennett is misrepresenting that Rice has certain recruiting advantages over SMU. This is why I never trust SMU's Commitment-the Silent Commitment has been proven to be a joke over and over. That's why I won't believe it until I see evidence of it myself in recruiting of Division 1A transfers and JUCOs who weren't full qualifiers anyway. Somebody ain't telling the full story. I pay careful attention to this type of stuff and the actual evidence as far as I can see is that SMU so far goes after a pretty small slice of that pie. I've cut my criticism on this issue in half because quite frankly in the last year or so has become unclear many times. If I see evidence otherwise I will be the first to report it.
Unfotunately, sir, your crusade has become an excuse for some out of convenience.
If a kid can get into SMU to walk on, he can get into SMU for a scholarship. Period. The kid got into Colgate and Rice. He could have gotten into SMU.
I'm sure you're right about Dilliard but Bennett had to be referring to something. My complaint is you offer a lot of conclusions on these issues-which is fine you may access to that information but let me tell you I follow the academic records of these recruits as close as one can without access to admission records and I just don't see it. There is a reason TCU, UTEP, Tulsa and UH get these Division 1A Transfers and JUCOs in and SMU gets walk-on Division 1A transfers who really weren't even average prospects anyway. If its true then Bennett is doing a lot worse job at recruiting than I thought and ought to be held to a much higher standard-no more comparison to Gregg, Rossley and Cavan who really were hamstrung.
I'll give an excellent example of how you can read between the lines and tell exactly what has been going on for years at SMU. SMU is desperate for Safety help. SMU has been recruiting a 3 star S named Patrick Resby from Corsicana. Resby committed to TCU during senior high school year but failed to become eligible at TCU. after "he failed to pass the test". However, he is on tract to graduate in December from Navarro. He's been offered by several schools and specifically says that he thinks SMU is close to offering. All I know is that in the past those offers from SMU never come and he goes on to play for someone on our schedule. Happens several times every year. I'll keep you informed. Because of the circumstances Resby is an excellent test case.

what about Booger at UNT (tore up Utex) what about ryan moats at LaTech
that's not true. Rice had favorable admission standards and lower test scores for athletes...smu did not. Rice has kinesiology, SMU got rid of P.E. in the 1990.
Rice's admission statistics for Football players are extremely high-under the old system it was close to 1200 SAT for example. This is all detailed in Rice's self evaluation study conducted a couple of years ago. I do believe they have a favoable course curiculm where athletes congregate in numbers far higher than at SMU for example.
I might add that you can follow as closely as you can, but that isn't very close. You are only going off of the information that recruits themselves provide. About the transfer issue, all I have ever said was there was a major change at the end of last year. Which is true. I can prove it. It is a documented fact; the only question is how much is it going to change things. Regardless, it doesn't affect the past, obviously. It really only affects this year going forward and hopefully we will see some results on December 18th. Hopefully there will be some junior college announcements soon. I should add that at this point, we are talking about transfers and not HS recruits. The HS recruits we aren't getting is primarily because we are not getting them as opposed to not getting them into school.
