Baylor's Problem

Postby Stallion » Sun Dec 17, 2006 9:16 pm

This from Texas Football:

Houston Madison DB Loyce Means originally committed to Baylor, but this week he was informed -- though cleared by the NCAA -- he did not meet Baylor's internal academic requirements. Means is looking around and appears headed to Houston, though TCU also is in pursuit.

...to those following recruiting this has happened to Baylor about 3-5 times with very nice prospects over about the last 3 years. Don't know exactly what this extra Baylor internal requirement is-may be an extra "core" requirement which was added a few years ago but its a familar occurence in each of the last 3 recruiting classes. These kids seem to gravitate toward TCU when Baylor can't get them in.

Is there a chance it is not an academic requirement?

except it uses the words "academic requirement". It can't be the Big 12's No non-qualifier rule because he meets NCAA Clearinghouse rules. TCU has also benefitted from Baylor backing off on some of these kids too in recent years. You'll see it all the time this time of year-a Big 12 recruit backing off his commitment for no apparent reason-its often an academic admission issue. But in TCU's defense these kids always seem to qualify by August. Stephen Hodge comes most prominently to mind.

Doesn't SMU have the same problem or have we backed off on that?

If they can't meet Baylor's requirements, I am pretty sure they can't meet SMU's. Funny how TCU seems to have lower standards.
