2 from the RGV: QB, LB

There is a set of twins from Los Fresnos-a 5A school between Brownsville and South Padre Island-that listed one of the twins as being recruited by SMU and ULaLa. Justin Springer is a LB 6-4, 225; his brother Jeremy is QB and is said to be less of target because of only having been a one year starter. Jeremy is the same size and was 198 of 330 passing for 3847 yds and 42 TDs. Also rushed 119 times for 600 yards.

As for those from the valley not being recruited by SMU, of course there's all-everything Bradley Stephens (aTm), an OL from Sharyland going to Houston, and first team all-state undersized DE from San Benito Joey Nunez, who is 6-1 225 and lists TCU and Houston as schools recruiting him.

Those Springer brothers from Los Fresnos both made All-State. I believe the QB was honorable mention and the LB was 2nd team.

The LB is a freakin' player. He would be a huge asset.

The QB is fast but is not a D1 passer...I saw him play and his stats are padded against the fact that Los Fresnos played probably 3 teams all year with a winning record in south, south Tx districts. (2 of those 3 were probably in the playoffs)

Los Fresnos is coached, I believe, by Scott Ford, who played for Marshall High School (Marshall, TX; Not John Marshall in San Antonio) in 1988 under one Dennis Parker. Also played for Parker at NTSU in 1992, under, coincidentally, Todd Dodge as OC.
Just trivia....

You're right. Ford is 36-11, including 12-1 this year at Los Fresnos. There was recently an article about him getting a contract extension after other 5A jobs in other parts of the state began opening up and mentioning his name.

Don't speed through Los Fresnos.

Hey everyone, it's good to see our local boys being discussed.

The QB is fast but is not a D1 passer...I saw him play and his stats are padded against the fact that Los Fresnos played probably 3 teams all year with a winning record in south, south Tx districts. (2 of those 3 were probably in the playoffs)

Keep in mind that against Austin Westlake in the regional semis he passed for 313 yards 2 TD's and rushed for 144 with one TD.

So yeah he did play against weak comp. in the valley, but he also played against a team that played in the State Title game and put up numbers he was putting up all year.

You can view highlights of all his games in 2006 here: www.teamfalcon.net

His twin, MLB can be an asset anywhere.

Others on the team include:

Jr OL 6'4 265 Benavides 2006 All State 1st Team
Jr OL 6'4 265 Atkinson

He is not a D1 passer. Would make a great WR/S tho.

Please explain why you think he's not a D1 passer. Thanks.

I was at that game in Victoria against Austin Westlake. He got the majority of his yards in the second half against backups. That game was out of reach at half.

I'm not trying to burst your bubble and I do think that both Springer brothers could aid SMU in reaching their goals on the gridiron... but not at QB.

Most of his yards in the second half with backups?

31-14 in the 3rd quarter is far from being over.

All the Westlake starters were in until there was 7 min in the 4th Quarter.

Now if you would have said that Nick Foles showed the arm strength that a typical D1 Player usually has and Springer's arm didn't have the arm strength that would make him a typical D1 QB then I might have agreed with you.

But to base it solely on a game that you think he didn't get true yards because you thought he was playing against backups doesn't seem like a good analysis of this young man.

Burst my bubble? I doubt it. I highly doubt any D1 schools are going to read this forum and your in depth analysis about this QB and make a decision based on your highly researched point of view.

Springer doesn't have the arm strength or the accuracy. This is not a discussion.

We both know that game was over a few drives into the game -- don't throw scores at me.

And I base my opinion on that *1* game against Austin Westlake because they were the only team that resembled mediocre that shared the field with Los Fresnos all year.

There we go! Proof by vigorous assertion.

Didn't see the game, nor do I know the players (except for Westlake's 'cause they showed up on Fox Sports Southwest), but I know that Scott Ford had a fantastic primer on being a bitchin' head coach, particularly a throwing head coach. Dennis Parker, Danny Long, Tom Thrower, Todd Dodge (and some I probably do not know) had minds before their time. I am inclined to believe that Scott could make hay with a marginal talent, and throwing the ball requires a little more than marginal talent, creampuff schedule or no.

Easy on the QB kid. Nobody thought Colt McCoy was going to win the QB competition at UT; go figure.
