DE Ben Goldthorpe Commits

Postby Stallion » Sun Jan 07, 2007 2:18 pm

according to Todd Willis of the DMN, Ben Goldthorpe 6-2, 225 (verified during the summer) from Denton Ryan has committed to SMU. I've read reports he may be up to 230-240 range today. Rated 1 Star on Scout and for some reason unrated on Rivals although he is in the Database with 3 stories on him. Had a lot of coverage from Rivals in the spring and summer but they haven't updated since then so some of this is guess work. In the summer he was hearing from schools like Floridam Texas Tech and A&M but again little recent info on the schools strongly recruiting him. At the Rivals combine he didn't run the 40 but had a 4.5 Shuttle(17th out of 28 DEs), 23 reps(9th out of 28), and a 27.3 vertical(17th out of 28). At Scout he had a slow Forty Time of 5.03, a 4.66 Shuttle, and a 28.5 vertical. claims to have gone to a Speed Performance camp and has increased his speed considerably.
Made some First Team and Second Team 4A All-State Teams as a Senior. As a Junior Denton Ryan was 5A but 4A as a Senior. As a Senior was First Team All District in 4A and 2nd Team All-District as a Junior in 5A.
As a Junior had 50 Tackles, 25 Tackles For Loss, 8 Sacks and 2 Passes Broken Up. Throws the Shot Put on the Track team.

ESPN's recruiting page/service projects him at defensive TACKLE, not DE, and ranks him at No. 95 among players at his position in the country.

The Associated Press, TexasFootball.com and scout.com named him second-team 4A All-State. Some TV station (KETK) claims he was a first-team all-state selection by the Associated Press, but I don't see any other report verifying that.

Senior year: 70 tackles, 25 for loss, 8 sacks.

yeah I gave him the benefit of the doubt-saw one AP report that you cited where he was First Team All-State-the rest said Second Team All-State.

Tom Lemming's Summer 2006 Report rated Goldthorpe 3 stars at DE. On FILM, "Very intense, no prisoners type of attitude, never stays blocked, can beat the double team, can redirect and apply pressure on the QB."

Rivals confirms Goldthorpe commitment in a story which says(but doesn't quote) that SMU was his only offer except for Division II teams. Rated two stars and 5.2.

I don't believe that is true, but maybe so. In any event, we apparently like him.

I like the 4.7 forty time Rivals is quoting. Good speed for a DE.

I would like like to report that I run a 4.3715 Forty. What does that do for ya? That 4.7 is unverified-in fact it is verified as 5.03 on Scout probably why he didn't even attempt to run the Forty for Rivals even though he partipated in all other drills.

Damn, if you ran a 4.3714 Forty instead of your 4.3715 you might be worth looking at. Better luck next year...meanwhile, work on getting that time down son.
