Basketball RecruitsJust wondering if anyone has any new stuff on guys we are looking at like the Katuka kid. Any news on him or others.
I believe he said something to the effect of that we might still sign two in the spring but left the possibility of us sticking those 2 schollies in our pocket and saving them. He also made note of how important it is to not "eat" a scholarship by wasting it on a player not worthy which is why Spencer was his only player last year.
On another note he did comment on how at SMU you can't recruit JUCOs like he did at FAU. I guess we shouldn't be expecting any sort of drastic addmission reform policies when the coach says you can't recruit JUCo's as opposed to maybe something less drastic such as its difficult to recruit them.
tp, I don't think he litterally means he is not allowed to bring in JUCO's. I think what he means is that he would rather not waste time recruiting non impact JUCO players being that we have such strict restrictions on transfer hours etc etc. He would rather invest the scholarships in top notch players out of highschool as opposed to below average JUCO's that our school is limited to often (which PB seems to be very content with often).
good, but how can you not find good juco talent.. Tarkanian did it for years, Gillespie turned around UTEP in 2 yrs w/ juco's.. there are tons of idiots who screw up their first chance at a free education and the time of their lives who can really play basketball at the D-1 level.. I don't expect you to respond to that, i am just making a point...
Maybe he sees smu as succeeding like the Butlers and Gonzagas of the bball universe by developing great team chemistry w/ a group of players who play together for 3-4 yrs... with juco's your are limited to 3 yrs max.. who knows...
I am not denying that there are some super juco's out there, but basketball is different from football. Freshman can star in basketball at the Div 1 level and can make more of an impact on a program. I believe our influx of freshman next year will be a difference maker .
