I still think poor ole Phil still doesn't get it. He had a quote in his press conference to the effect of, "I'm still not against playing more than one QB".

I almost had a heart attack.

Why we're on the subject, how does Phil not get the #1 recruiting class year in and year out? Every time I listen to him speak I get all fired up. How can anyone watch him and not feel the same? Doesn't mean I believe him, but for a few minutes I'm in la la land and we're gunning for a national title, albeit Phil was a little more subdued than in years past, no more bold predictions after last years bowl promise.

Also, is the first year he hasn't claimed this is his best recruiting class since he's been here? If I recall correctly he has thrown that out each year.

he said that last year when his class definitely wasnt the best he's ever had, kinda funny that he could've said it this year and everyone wouldve sorta believed him, but according to you he didnt

He always says something about "can't assess a class now" (which is true) and "I'm not into someone's rankings" (smart man) .... but I have heard that he and the other coaches privately are thrilled with this year's class. That's in addition to the obligatory quotes for the media about "how pleased we are," etc., etc., etc.

I do like the grandfatherly reading glasses he's incorporated over the last year.

What SMU really needs is stability. SMU needs to re-build tradition and we do that with sticking with the same coach.

Bennet is a good man, a good sheperd of this herd of Mustangs. SMU needs to keep him for 20 years. TO STAY FOR 20 YEARS MEANS HE WINS.

I like the way he has built a team. He built a pretty good team without shortcuts. Shortcuts like wholesale JUCO signing days. We need a few ( 4-5 ) a year, but not 10 to 20.

SMU needs to have a long run of classy success to saturate the maket with positives and build the fan base.

Keeping Bennett ( WINS ) is the best way to do this. But if the winning seasons of 8-12 do not materialize, SMU will be forced to change again.

IF he wins, and I know we all want that, he better not bolt immediately for a better gig. As someone pointed out in another thread, we've stayed with him longer than most, if not all, schools would have in the same position.

It's not something to worry about now, but I would love to have to worry about it after next season. Phil needs to return the loyalty shown to him by SMU if the case arises.

i don't think he would do that... A lot of coaches who bolt after turning around a program are at schools that don't have much history, or the coach might think the school has reached it's potential. SMU has unlimited potential once the wins start rolling in.

Unfortunately, and I hate to say this, a great deal of college football fans have long forgotten or never even heard of SMU's "glory days." Since those days have long passed us (over 20 years now) I wouldn't assume that tradition would play any role in keeping a coach around. Maybe 10 years ago, but not now. I could be wrong and I hope I am, but I just don't see it happening.
We've got to begin building a new tradition, and that needs to start with consistently winning conference titles.

Best NEW tradition

" The Boulevard "

Great Game Day fun and sights.

When we get on top of the game again, I can see college gameday in front of Dallas Hall.
