Stratford's Andrew Luck, the standout quarterback entering his senior season, has narrowed his collegiate choices to four schools, including Rice.

Luck is also considering Stanford, Purdue and Northwestern.

"They all have good academics which is a strong part of my interest," said Luck, who plans to study civil engineering. "They may not be the most successful programs but they're all headed in the right direction and they have great coaches."

Luck threw for 2,909 yards and 27 touchdowns last season.

He completed 68.7 percent of his passes and threw only six interceptions.

Rivals 4 star, ranked 59th best prospect in the nation, ranked as the 7th best player in Texas. Good for Rice, bad for us.

SMU ditched that program a decade ago b/c of how capital intensive it was to maintain equipment in labs vs. the enrollment at the time. I don't know if SMU got it back or not. Stanford is Ivy-League, west coast-style. And Northwestern is also Ivy-League, Mid-West style.

I love my school, and I wish we had that significant of an academic reputation nationally, but we don't. We compete, but they've competed in that niche a lot longer and a lot more effectively.

Good for Luck. Wish he'd choose us b/c I would love to see him suit up red/blue. But hey, facts are facts, and SMU simply doesn't compare in CME.

What is CME? SMU has a Civil Engineering (CE) program. Pye had ditched it at one time, but it was reinstated and has been back for some time now.

I'd say with the two new engineering buildings on campus (Junkins and Embrey) that SMU is trying to revive the engineering department. There are numerous new toys either donated by regional companies or purchased by the university being used in the labs. In just a few years, the engineering department has moved its lab department from sharing a building with the old gym in a metal shed to Embrey. I strongly suggest you come check out all the cool things being done with the engineering department nowadays.

If by some time you mean within the last 5 years then yes you are correct. When I graduated in 2002 the program had not been reinstated yet.

I do not know if you are gamblers but if there is horse racing anywhere in the world they have similcast Oaklawn Race Track and they recently got voter approval for other "gambling devices". Games like video poker, etc. I have never been but if you have any excess money you are not willing to send to me you could do that.

There is a riverboat deal on one of the lakes that includes a meal and would probably be nice.

I do not spend any time in Hot Springs other than the live horse racing when I can. It sounds like you have good relaxing plans to me, just enjoy the scenery.

They first reinstated a graduate program and then a little later the under graduate program. I believe the under grad program has been active more than five years, though they did not have any graduating seniors yet by 2002.

From SMU News January 2001:
"Civil engineering was one of the first three engineering majors offered at SMU, but the program was eliminated in 1992. The new Department of Environmental and Civil Engineering will begin by offering a master's degree in civil engineering in September 2001, with an emphasis on structural engineering. Along with this traditional civil engineering degree, the department will offer a master's degree in facilities engineering for working professionals. The program will be expanded to include an undergraduate degree in civil engineering as well."

Civil & Mechanical...had a buddy that was one of the last out, and he was really disappointed that it happened.

Yeah, me too, but it is back and that is great. BTW, the Mechanical Engineering program was never shut down that I am aware of.

I'm just hoping we have a good time. It was between Hot Springs and Galveston's new "Hamptons on the Gulf" area. I wanted to go south. She wanted to go north. She is allowing me the privilege of going up to Little Rock to see the Clinton Presidential Library if we have a chance. I figure that'll be fun, but she doesn't get into government, history, and politics like I do. It's big for her to agree to go.
