Imagine Bryan Hopkins playing cornerback.. I am dead serious.. This kid has a 40+ vertical jump and its legit. I saw him jump at the SMU camp.. He was clearly the best football player at the camp. He plays qb in his dad's offense but he will not be a qb in college.. I don't think he even took a snap at qb at the smu camp.. He would run at receiver and burn every corner and then turnaround and play corner and shut down the receiver.. If you worried about his height his make up speed and vertical make up for that... There are not many guys who will out jump him unless they are 6-4 and have a huge vertical.. Oh yah he was all-state as a junior in basketball..
Hopkins like ups + coaches son + great attitude= great pickup

Be ready for the "cheerleader" accusations, but I've got to believe anyone offered now has to be a pretty special athlete. Whether recruiting is going well or not, you aim for the moon with early offers. I don't know a lot about Little Elm, but I was able to find a news story about them which made this guy sound like a great athlete.
Welcome to SMU, Cole!

You are correct, i will definately get a few cheerleader accusations.. But unlike the majority of posters on Ponyfans, I am a coach. Also I watched this kid roll up 400+ yds (running and passing) against frisco last fall (4A playoff team) and watched him for four straight days at the smu camp and talent day a month ago..

The 40" Vertical leap certainly gets my attention. That is what Wide Receiver Dillard at Rice can do. His talents in that respect finished our bowl hopes last year on that 4th quarter touchdown when he went up and made that great catch. Sounds like he is an excellent recruit also. WELCOME TO SMU !

Cole is on heck of an athlete but he doesn't have a 40" vert. Doesn't compete in the high jump, but has a best of 22'8" in the long jump. Compared to Eddie Morgan who has a 23'8" best in the long jump and virtually the same speed, but only a 32" vert. Until Cole does an official, most would guess he comes in under 31" as a vertical (still very nice, but hardly a 40" vert).

Who are you and where do you get your info? I watched this kid get tested for his vertical at the SMU football camp (Not Sr day b/c the NCAA doesn't allow to measure for the 40 and vertical at sr day anymore) and I watched him jump up and make catches a guy his height should not make..
Readers please don't believe this guy, I saw Cole (yes I am calling him by his name b/c I know personally know him) get a 40"+ vertical.

I don't follow your logic... you're saying that if he has the same speed but a shorter long jump than Morgan, that means he must have a shorter vertical than Morgan? If the logic were that simple, Carl Lewis would be the greatest high jumper ever.

The dude is still only 5'9 (if that is true).
Has anyone heard from RENFRO, the
155lb WR from SLC that signed with TCU?? No. Because he's a midget.
If anyone recalls, that guy was perhaps the BEST WR in the state (stats, speed, hands) when he won the Champ at SLC...but he was still only 155lbs and 5'10

If he accomplished a 40 inch true vertical jump (standing still and springing straight up), then he is one of a handful of people in the entire world who can accomplish this. Having said that, a step aided leap that high is still pretty darn special...................

A) I'm told Beasley is now 5-10.5 - and told that by someone who knows better than I do, and better than anyone else on this board (except maybe tmustang). Either way, he's not Bobby Chase - we all get that.
B) Steve Smith (Carolina Panthers) is listed at 5-9. Does that mean he's REALLY 5-7?
C) Santana Moss (Washington Redskins) is listed at 5-10. Does that mean he's REALLY 5-8?
Neither is "a midget." Both are among the greatest receivers on the planet. Moss is a pure burner in the speed department and has sensational hands. Smith isn't quite as fast, but is fast enough, tough as nails, durable, runs great routes and catches everything near him.
Height does not dictate great ability at WR (I should know - I'm 6'3", played WR and was terrible). By all accounts, this Beasley guy is a sensational athlete, and I get the distinct impression we're very fortunate to have him.

so u think that dictating a
few exceptions to the rule proves your point?
Why isn't MIKE RENFRO's son one of these exceptions?

Um, how do we know if Clint Renfro will or will not be such an exception? He hasn't taken the field at the 1a level yet has he?

Who knows? Maybe because he's skinny as a rail? Maybe because he was a true freshman and Gary Patterson - like damn-near every other coach in the country - likes to redshirt his true freshmen unless they're a bunch of grown men, like Adrian Peterson, etc.? Maybe because he's at TCU, and until he does something against the Ponies, we just don't care? Don't wish him any ill will or anything, but Renfro just isn't that important in our world. Nice player in HS, I assume. Maybe he'll do well at TCU. If he doesn't light up SMU, he's completely meaningless. I'm interested in the guys we get. Yes, Moss and Smith are exceptional examples, but football - especially at the college level - is full of short WRs who can play (see Brian Berry, Albert Johnson, etc.) Would coaches like every WR to look like Terrell Owens and run routes and catch like Jerry Rice? Sure, probably. But stop ripping a new MUSTANG just because he's not 6-4 and you don't know much about him, just because you want Coach Bennett replaced. Team goes before personal grudges. Welcome this guy with open arms - if he's offered this early, he probably has a ton of athletic ability.
