never got around to it....what were we busy doing? Since we consider ourselves such an academic power, you would think a player with the ability to have offers from BCS schools AND the grades to get into Stanford would be a major priority for us

Apparently, we are just a little busy right now trying to figure out how to win a game...or two. Guess recruiting will just have to wait. Besides, according to our resident Rivals addict, all the good ones are already gone.

Signed? Isn't he in this year's HS senior class?

I love it. Our staff is too busy trying to figure out how to win that they dont have time to recruit. With logic like that, how have we not gone to a bowl game in over 20 years!

If you talk to a kid and get no interest from him, why would you offer him? Then you have to hold open the offer until he says, yes or no. That limits who else you can offer. Apparently, we took a pass at him, got no interest and moved on. What else are we to do? NCAA rules do not allow us to hotbox him, send him money, hire his mom to work, kidnap his girlfriend, TM him to death, email him to death, call him hourly.

Some Coaches don't play that game. Example No. 1 Todd Graham. If he wants you he'll come right after you-he has confidence in his recruiting ability. According to Rivals Tulsa has offered 66 players SMU 28. Graham has offered 28 three stars and above and SMU 12. What a bunch of crap. You telling me that SMU only had interest in about 12 of the Top 150 players in Texas-actually make that about 9 because 3 offerees are from out of state. And then he blows that crap up your Mustang Club [deleted] that he is only interested in the select few he gets to his camp. And some of you actually buy it. If there is a great player in DFW or a legacy I would put the offer on the table early and often until I was told no-and then again until I was told No about 3 times. This is our backyard-we need to act like it. Graham runs circles around Bennett in recruiting. He was even outrecruiting SMU last year when he was at Rice until he left. Instead well get treated the Mustang Club Recruiting Roundup where Phil will convince you that he had Braden Smith circled as his No. 1 target when in reality he probably wasn't even in his Top 10 QB targets.

Yes. That is what a good recruiter does! Any good salesman knows that you start selling when you hear no. A good recruiter is relentless in his pursuit of a player. You think Pete Carroll tucks his tail when he hears a no thank you? You suggest that when we hear a no thanks we should move on? That is insanity. We need to be working twice as hard as the next guy to get players. A lot of times, when signing a 17 or 18 year old kid, if comes down to going to a place where they feel they are wanted the most. This is why schools that are the first to offer usually have an inside track. It is Psych 101.....everybody loves to feel the love and that they are wanted.

It is my understanding that it is first come, first served. For instance, we could offer 4 wideouts, take the first two who commit, and then tell the other two, sorry you had your chance, but waited to long. I believe that is what most schools do.

I don't think he is giving up too easy. I think he has a strategy, and it simply isn't working.
I keep suggesting what he does in soundbites, but it isn't sinking in. Bennett recruits off of HIS lists first...the one criteria that appears to be consistent is that the lion's share (as in, virtually all) of his recruits come from the SMU camps he holds. Period. He isn't picking stars. He picks from his camps because he has seen them (or his assistants have). He appears to reserve some spots for opportunities, but by and large (right/wrong/indifferent), the reason he offers fewer 3 stars is that they are not at his camps IN THE FIRST PLACE, or in some cases, he knows that he has a snowball's chance in hell of getting them, so why bother? (I AM NOT SAYING HE IS DOING THE RIGHT THING...or that you are wrong calling him out on it on this board...quite the contrary....)
Now, if you can prove me more than anecdotally incorrect here, I will eat crow and shut up. But when you say that Smith probably was not in his Top 10 QBs, ergo, he'd be offering MORE QBs than he is. He isn't; ergo, Braden probably is near the top of the list.
Don't misunderstand me...whether that is a good thing or not isn't my point...I tend to agree with you on that aspect. I'm just saying that if you look at his practical behavior and his marketing approach, he is/has approached this with HEAVY reliance on his camps...a marketing choice, if you will. The difference between rifling and shotgun marketing is illustrated here. Trouble is, many times I wonder what clump of trees he is hunting.

Prove you wrong. About what? That you must be one of the most naive people in the world to fall for Phil Bennett's SMU Camp [deleted]? Well Phil Bennett has about 8 games to make the "magic" work before he gets his [deleted] run out of here and that type of thinking is exposed as total crap. You think I haven't had discussions like this in 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006. Every year there are people on this board telling me that Rivals doesn't know what its talking about and SMU's team will be real swell led by super star sleeper recruits like Cole Beasley and Braden Smith who Head Coach X found in South Dakota. Teams that have winning programs 90% of the time have better quality football players who were more highly recruited than those on the other team. If either Phil or you actually think that only 9 players in the Texas Top 150 can help his football team then I'm wasting my time even discussing this with you.

How can he get so riled up saying the exact same thing 100 posts in a row. Must be drinking tonight.
Not that he is wrong - but I agreed with him 100 posts ago.
