One of the largest contingents of students annually come from St. Louis and, to me, it has been outrageous that Bennett doesn't recruit that area as well as Chicago and Kansas City where we also get a large number of students! Too bad we can't recruit kids like this:

We've got players from Oklahoma (Muse, Bailey, McCann), Arkansas (Jason Jackson), Louisiana (Chris Butler), Florida (Serge Elizee) .... I think we have someone from Illinois or someplace .... there's no reason we wouldn't look, I assume. Sure, the recruiting concentration is closer to home, but do you know if this kid is actually interested in us? Or would listen? Drop an e-mail to Coach Roark (recruiting coordinator).

I doubt that this recruit even knows that we exist, which is the primary problem! We do SOME recruiting in Oklahoma, but not much. We were supposed to be recruiting Louisiana, but I haven't seen it. The top prospects in Lemming and Super Prep never list us. I have fraternity brothers who used to tell me how popular SMU was up in Little Rock, but have rarely seen a recruit come from there. Its ridiculous not to consider other areas especially since so many kids want to go away from school. Look at Coach Doh. Has he gotten a recruit from the local area this year? No, most are out of California. Those kids don't know about SMU's problems and never have heard of the school until he showed up to recruit them. Its almost like a fresh start to recruit away from here. SMU's lousy football reputation is a lot less known in St. Louis, KC, and Chicago because the papers aren't putting down the school and most of their friends have never heard of us. We have a lot to sell... a beautiful campus, beautiful girls, warm climate, great city with a lot to do..., but the kids that live here are more concerned with going somewhere else. Plus so many top schools that are relatively close to Dallas recruit the area that the top prospects who want to stay local usually choose them over us. Just a fact.
