A True SMU Recruiting story

This happened just a few years ago.

A local honor roll student athlete. State heavyweight wrestling champ, 1st team all district offensive & defensive lineman. 6"3" 300 lbs.

Family ties to SMU. Family ties communicates student athlete accomplishments to SMU recruiting football coordinator never getting a reply from university. Family ties repeats procedure never to hear back again.

Local student athlete gets many offers, none from SMU. Student athlete would love to attend SMU. However, interest is obviously not mutual.

Local student athlete commits & signs with competing school Rice.
Goes on to be First Team All Wac & nominated for Outland Trophy.

Moral of the story. SMU needs to improve recruiting. Although all the focus is on the new HC the $$ also needs to be thrown @ the best recruiter in America.

I remain loyal although its hard watching what's going on @ the Hilltop.

One of the many reasons we needed a change! Obviously he did not attend one of PB's camps so he never would have been recruited.

Dark to Blasingame to Musial...sounds way to simple, easy, clean..what is the "rest of the story", what are you leaving out? I used to coach high school baseball back in the early 80's, wish I had $1 for every "let me tell you what the UT baseball coaching staff did to my all-state kid...."

There really is no rest of the story.

Just poor recruiting. I'd almost call it just plain lazy. Hard to understand the lack of response. Not even a Thank you reply or anything.

He had several really good choices & the Rice thing worked out well for him.

No sour grapes. He received a great education @ Rice.

My point is in addition to a quality HC, SMU really needs to get a very good recruiting coord.
Looking @ past recruiting classes its easy to see why the records have been what they are.

Coaches, especially assist. are like hound dogs at a fish fry man, if there is / was some stud kid with SMU ties, somebody, someone would have been on this kid like white on rice, especially considering the recruiting climate on the hilltop the last "x" years...nice story, not buying it...

Not asking anybody to buy it.
Its the plain & simple truth. Alot of people like to think there's more to things when there's really not.
Its obvious why the record is what it is, bad, lazy recruiting.

Good god, quit dogpiling Coach Bennett. He's gone. Time for someone new. The lingering hate for the man is nothing more than sad.

It's a shame that we lost a guy with SMU ties, but damn, it happens everywhere at some point.

I think FtT was implying that there's less to the story, not more to it.

I agree that Bennett is now gone, and he's not in charge of recruiting anymore. Whatever system he used worked for awhile, but in the end, we were 1-11 this year. Let's just put the last six years behind us as a noble experiement that did not work out.

my point is that SMU has to do a better job of recruiting.
Although we all think they are contacting ALL the local kids that make good grades & can play some ball, they DON'T.

The whole point is in addition to a good new head coach, a good new recruiting coordinator is also very much needed. Can't continue to make the small east Tx schools your hotbed for recruiting.
