CUSA Recruiting Developments

stole 3 top Houston area recruits from a bushel full of BCS schools including two BCS decommits

1) Athlete Jackie Hinton-rated 3 stars(5.5) decommitted from Oklahoma St. offers from OSU, Arizona St., Utah, and Rice

2) LB Anthony Lewis Aldine-rated 3 Stars(5.6) offers from Nebraska, Purdue, Minnesota, Kansas, Arizona, Navy and Air Force

3) LB Jarvis Smith Rated surprisingly only a 2 star(5.3). Decommitted from Baylor and in addition other offers allegedly from LSU, TCU, Kansas St. UPDATED: Rated 4 star by Scout

Other signs of life in the usually moribud CUSA recruiting race include UCF with about 10 3 stars and in contention for the Top non-BCS class in the country and Southern Miss under new Coach Larry Fedora with one 4 star and six 3 stars. Tulsa just got the No. 1 rated (by some) JUCO QB in the Country Jacob Bower making its 4th 3 star recruits-they've probably lost 3 or 4 more top recruits to decommitments to BCS schools. Bower btw was supposed to visit Hawaii in December but Jones put his visit on hold. Reports from Hawaii generally stated Jones wanted to bring in both Craft(who reportedly is considering SMU) and Bower but that Jones may have had Craft slightly higher rated than Bower. Good news for a conference which desperately needs to raise the quality of its recruiting for the good of the conference. It will be interesting to see if Sumlin can continue this recruiting in Houston as several more BCS committed players visited UH this weekend.

Question: Did SMU start classes today? Interested to see if Craft enrolls so he would be availiable for spring practice. BTW Hawaii boards report that June Jones regularly has 5-6 QBs on scholarship.

I trust that is the number of QBs and not the height.

Sumlin must be using the OU model of offering these kids jobs

Or offering them a chance to play for one of the top programs in CUSA. Either or.

Wow. Kids will decommit from one school to another. And from BCS schools to non-BCS schools.

Who woulda thunk?

Where was Sumlin in OU's recruiter pecking order? Also, did he specialize in the Houston area? I think he could do some very good things at UH which would be good for our conference as a whole. Hopefully he will do great- just not quite as good as JJ.

I think the only real rationale for hiring Sumlin is that he is a big time recruiter. He wasn't even a coordinator was he?

UPDATE-actually he was Co-Offensive Coordinator. But he was promote in 2006 from TE and Special Teams Coach.

Yes, he was co-offensive coordinator at OU and he was o-cooordinator at A&M starting in 2002 prior to that. I know that his ability to recruit was a big factor in them hiring him, just wondering if anyone knew specifics on the job he did while at A&M or OU in recruiting (regions, top recruits brought in, any recognition he may have received etc.).

I'm pretty sure it was Houston.

we may have underrated the recruiting ability of this Larry Fedora guy now at Southern Miss. Only has 13 commitments but 9 commitments are 3 stars or above including a 4 star. Just stole an Arkansas CB commitment rated high 3 stars 5.7 from Arkansas(also considered offers from Auburn, Louisville, Purdue, Marshall Troy) and another 3 star DT who had offers from Arkansas, OU and OSU.

make that 10 commitments over 3 star out of 14-they just got a JUCO DT from California rated 3 stars
