Derek Tomlin--Southlake Carroll

Postby jacklewis » Tue Jan 22, 2008 4:21 pm

Anyone aware of our interest in this kid, Derek Tomlin? Great combine numbers...and it's reflected in his play....great speed, tackling, playmaking ability...check out his video on Rivals....can't believe he's only a 2 star...probably becauses he was an early commitment to North Texas (I assume you immediately lose a star when you commit there). He de-committed late last month and newspaper reports indicated he wanted to go to a better academic school, maybe walk on at A&M.

Wow a 98.4 GPA...That is a seriously smart kid there!

I really liked this kid in the MNW v SLC game. I didn't know that he decommitted from UNT but hope JJ gets after him.

Not saying the kid can not play but he is undersized for what we need at LB.

He is already at the 200 lb. mark. With a college level strength and conditioning program it shouldn't take too much to add some weight
Those who complain about a problem are simply wasting time they could use to fix it.

I will take 200 pound seniors all day...good outside backer can easily be effective at 210 to 215

For me personally, I want my outside LBs to be at 6'2" or 6'3". 4.5 is great. I would be happy with 4.7 and 235lbs. We need to get to a point where we are not being overpowered like we have been. Our kids look like HS players when we line up against our competition in our own conference. It is time to start recruiting the right level of player and I think that is beginning to happen. This kid (and again I do not speak to his ability) is my size when I signed at SMU in 1968 and I was small then. They are growing them much bigger now.

Any relation to Eric Tomlin, SMU LB from the mid 90s?

I know 200 seems small but that was most likely taken before his senior year...so chances are that he might be 205/210 now.

That aside what is the difference between 200 and 210? Of the Rivals top outside LBs 4 of the top 6 are 210 or less. (8 of the top 15 are as well).

I want taller so they can carry the added weight without slowing slowing down.
