Rumor has it Euless Trinity DE/DT Mao Leota (6-1, 270, 4.7) will be on campus this weekend! Was considering Hawaii, has an offer from Utah. Also has played guard and fullback at times, but projects on the defensive line.

I know, Coach Jones doesn't use tight ends. Make him a monster defensive end or something.

They also have a senior DB named WAYNE HEIMULI - wonder if he's a younger brother of former A&M offensive lineman Semisi Heimuli (one of the toughest college players I ever saw)?

No idea how good he is, of course.

That would be some good help on defense if we could get them.

I like the 4.7 speed with 270 pounds already on the frame... Could be a real beast...

DMN was nice enough to highlight some of his teammates before one of the playoff games:

Elikena Fielo LB Team leader in tackles (145) had 14 vs. Arl. Bowie
Robert Griffin DL 6-7, 360-pounder has bulldozed his way to 51/2 sacks
Wayne Heimuli DB 3 INTs, 8 pass breakups and 118 tackles this season
Earnest Norman LB Hard-hitter had 7 of his 110 tackles last week vs. Bowie
Siosaia Tuipulotu DL Leads the Haka and has 21/2 sacks in the playoffs

And the DMN says Leota is up to 280.

They sure do know how to grow 'em.

WOW, 6'1" 280 and anywhere close to 4.7 speed.....remind anyone of Adrian Haywood ? We need DL/DE's that are Big & Fast ! SIGN this guy !

Haywood had a quick first step, but did he have 4.7 speed?
Based on that speed, and the comments from opposing coaches (in another thread), this guy is fast approaching the top of my wish list.

Not sure Haywood is the best comparison, although it's understandable why PonyFans would like the idea so much. As productive as Haywood was, you have to remember that his strength, particularly in his upper body, was minimal when he came out of Tyler JC. Leota is just as quick, if not quicker, but he's extremely powerful. His legs are very thick and his trunk looks more like that of an offensive guard than a defensive end. But because of his speed, he can put his hand down and rush off the edge. He stays very low, giving tall offensive tackles fits as they try to get a hand on him, and uses his strength in his arms and hands to destroy running backs who try to chip him on his way into the quarterback. His power will allow him to play a number of positions on the defensive line, but I (and a lot of the coaches I talk to) like him best at defensive end, where his rare combination of speed and strength will cause major matchup problems for offenses trying to block him. Should contribute on special teams, as well.

I believe Haywood was also 2-3 inches taller.

Glad to see you back Recruiting Guru! What are your thoughts on the two linemen that had their scholarships dropped? Good move by June given their level of talent?
