The same Mississippi football fans who told me that Coach O's recruiting results at Ole Miss were misleading because he was signing players that couldn't qualify academically, tell me that Southern is doing the same thing. The record shows they were right about Coach O's classes.
This is a general comment and not directed at Brown.

the difference is that at Ole Miss the SEC severely limits the ADMISSION of non-qualifiers while at Southern Miss and other CUSA schools they can be admitted. Marshall is another that is admitting non-qualifiers. So SEC teams can SIGN all they want but they can't ADMIT them. They end up going to JUCO. At Southern Miss they are ADMITTED but can't participate in football for a year.

Another dumb question for Stallion--does the year out count against them? After his penance, will Mr. 5-star Non-qualifier only have three years of eligibility left?

He will have four years left to play four. Basically, he is reshirting without team participation.

Couldn't the NCAA deal with filth much better by having an academic threshold to meet by signing date that would project the eligibility of recruits and those not meeting the threshold could not sign or be offered until they met the academic threshold. As it is now the schools that have the lowest standards are rewarded and we see SEC and other schools go through this ridiculous charade of signing 38 to 25 scholarships when the limit is 25. Make the 25 man limit a hard number so that schools signing boatloads of academic questionmarks are actually penalized if the kid never qualifies. Boy that would really change the dynamics of recruiting in favor of academically qualified students. You'd think some of the cleaner BCS conferences might be getting tired of the charade and be willing to form a majority to get this passed.

Brown's decision was solely based on the ability to play immediately without the question of academics holding him out a year at SEC/BCS schools. Good news for USM and Coach Fedora, and a chance for this kid to play his way to the next level.. Hope it works out for him.

he can't play immediately if he doesn't qualify-can't even practice

precisely...but he was assured that he would have the opportunity to get on the field next fall, per qualifying, as opposed to waiting behind current players and/or fighting with admissions/academic requirements at some of the other BCS schools that were interested.
BTW, several BCS schools down here in the Navasota area recently to look at Dexter Pratt, RB. Offers reportedly already pending fom OU, UT, etc.

as far as playing the requirements at LSU and Southern Miss would be the same-NCAA mminimum qualification standards.
