SMU in on Maryland WR

Postby Lotus » Tue May 20, 2008 9:40 am

Brandon Felder of Oxon Hill, Md., is a 6-2.5, 167, 4.43 (36-inch vertical) with a 2.8 GPA. Has offers from Maryland, Boston College and Penn State. Thinks Syracuse and Illinois are close to offering, and has always liked Michigan.

"As a junior Felder caught 43 passes for 943 yards and 11 touchdowns. Playing safety he picked off three passes.

Says SMU, UConn and Notre Dame are among the other schools showing the most interest.

I must say it's nice reading blurbs like this than something like "SMU in on Baird, TX athlete John Smith. Smith has also gotten interest from Angelo St, Tarleton St, and Central State (Oklahoma)."

I thnk a 2.8 qualifies under NCAA rules. Correct?

We have a learning center and a great chance for a quality education.

Oxen Hill Maryland is not in one of the best parts of the DC area and the PG County school system is pretty weak. That 2.8 GPA will require some remedial work to get up to speed at most Division 1 Universities.

you know Dexter Manley almost went to SMU before we lost him to Oklahoma St. We seriously recruited him.

Actually, from what I've read, he is anything but dumb. He had horrible advice (obviously) and made some terrible decisions (even more obviously), and he clearly never had to go to class as a youngster. But I've read several stories that talk to his coaches, teammates and even opponents who called him "very smart/bright" and talked about how he picked up defensive schemes in a flash. He's the posterchild for an academic system that allowed great athletes to slide by unchallenged, but there are a lot of folks out there who know him who swear he has plenty of brainpower - he just never got any guidance about how to use it until he was a national academic punchline.
