From the SMU Blog on the DMN:

Jasmine Davis, a senior guard on the Duncanville girls basketball team, has orally committed to SMU. Davis (5 foot, eight inches) said she hopes to take advantage of SMU's journalism school.

"SMU has a great women's basketball program, too,'' she said.

Davis averaged 5.6 points and one assist per game last season.

Oral commitments are non-binding. The earliest date a player can sign a national letter of intent is Nov. 12.

Verbally, not orally.

Nice to get a commitment from Duncanville as this is traditionally one of the top programs in the state if not the country.

Sure would be nice to get in the door there, like football may have done in DeSoto with Wilkerson and Atchison.

Welcome to Mustang Nation, Jasmine!

I trust Rompola but recruiting someone who averaged 5 points last year as a junior makes one wonder a bit.

They aren't the dominating program that they were when Sandra Meadows and Sarah Hackert (sp?) were there as well as the great Tamika Catchings. But it's still a very fine program.

If I'm looking at this right, this girl and the other from Mansfield Summit will be replacing Brittani Allen and Elbie Gates' spots. I know Gates is a forward but we might have a lot of them with the girl from Kansas coming in.

Rhonda's recruiting has drastically improved over the last couple of years. Can't wait to see Will, Samuels, Hill and co. as juniors and sophomores.

And Jt, it is DMN style to call it oral commitment not verbal. Have no idea why.

Totally different players. Elliott - the kid from Kansas - is a 6'3" post player who's going to fill Janielle Dodds' role. She's not going to affect Allen's and Gates' time at all. Some of the others, Mahnesmith and Shell, will affect those two, but the Kansas kid (Christine Elliott) won't at all.

Could not agree with you more.

the uptick in recruiting seemed to coincide with the move from the WAC to CUSA

I guess I meant that these two are replacing the two juniors who will be seniors for 08-09 -- just from a scholarship standpoint. I meant we're going to have a pretty good number of post people and needed to balance the roster on the guard front. My bad if that was misinterpreted.

I'm also shocked to hear that this person is faster than Hill. That's fast.

Just saw where both of our commitments are mentioned on the ESPN front page of the Girls High School Basketball section. Nice to get the mention – nice to see these kids listed in the national prospect database. Good job coaches. Way to take advantage of the successful season you had this past year.

With Shepherd and Cobb graduating, a kid with wheels who can play defense is vital. Sounds like a good pick-up, Rhonda.
