6' 4" and good enough for JJ. That makes him pretty good.

From D magazine, I also read a follow up that said Romo never called and it was Bartel that actually called.

"I listen to Kidd Kraddick in the mornings (sue me). Today, Kidd read a letter from a listener who relayed a story about Southlake Carroll’s playoff loss last week to Abilene. If you didn’t already hear, back-up quarterback Kyle Padron was playing for the injured Riley Dodge, and while taking a knee to set up for a last-minute, game-winning field goal, Padron fumbled the snap. Abilene recovered the ball and won the title game.

This listener claimed that Padron received a phone call later that week from none other than Tony Romo, who knows a thing or two about fumbling a snap in a big game. Tony gave him a pep talk, told him to shake it off and go out next year and have a season like the Cowboys are having now. Now I have no way of confirming this story, but I believe it because, well, I just want to. In my head, Padron then said, “Aw, shucks. Thanks Tony, you’re the greatest!â€

After the google session, I am disappointed and thought we would be in the chase for a bigger name..

From www.hsgametime.com:

Spring football: Southlake Carroll

06:51 PM CDT on Wednesday, April 23, 2008

It's a new era for Carroll. Gone are mainstays such as Dodge at quarterback, running back Tre' Newton and receiver Blake Cantu.

They're gone to North Texas, Texas and Oregon, respectively. In their place are new names such as Kyle Padron, Tommy Avers and Ryan Walker.

Padron is the heir apparent at quarterback, while Avers tops the depth chart at running back. Both played last season when Dodge and Newton went down with injuries.

Walker is among a host of up-and-coming receivers, including Josh Rake, Ryan Blair and Chris Garvin, who will be trying to make names for themselves. Like Padron and Avers, they will also have to live up to the names of the past.

"Everybody's going to be judged," Padron said. "I'm going to be judged by Riley, Tommy's going to be judged by Tre'. We're a totally different team, and everybody has to adjust to it."

Padron completed 33 passes in seven games last season. At 6-4 and 215 pounds, he's a different type quarterback than the elusive Dodge.

"He's a big, strong guy in the pocket, but he's versatile enough to run the football with his strength and power," coach Hal Wasson said. "He's a very mentally tough kid. He knows it's his time now."

Southlake Carroll spring game: May 29, 7 p.m. at Dragon Stadium

2008 Team to Watch: Southlake Carroll

PrepNation.com continues to look ahead to the 2008 high school football season. We're still a couple months away from the start of our expanded preseason national rankings release, but it's not too soon to whet your appetite with mini-previews of teams that are likely to figure very prominently on the national scene this season.

Southlake Carroll will begin the 2008 season in a very unfamiliar position: as the hunter, rather than the hunted. Not only will the Dragons not begin this season ranked No. 1 in the nation (as they have done more than once this decade), it's very unlikely they will be the top-ranked team in the state or area.

Last year under new head coach Hal Wasson, Carroll lost two games and failed to reach the state championship game for the first time since 2001. A season marked by untimely injuries and costly turnovers ended with a shocking 22-21 loss to Abilene in the third round of the playoffs.

Only one starter on offense and four on defense are back, but coaches and others connected with the program are confident that the Dragons' tremendous tradition of work ethic and pride will never graduate.

First-year starter Kyle Padron, a 6-4, 210-pound senior, is likely to be the fourth straight Carroll quarterback to earn a Division I scholarship. He will work with an entirely new, but highly athletic, group of offensive skill players.

End Brayden Burnett (6-3, 245) is a relentless and productive player to lead the defense. On the other side will be junior Jackson Richards, a 6-4, 250-pounder who made an early commitment to Texas Tech.

Richard Bartel = Nicest Guy Ever

A hard-working FBvian checked out the story of ToRo and Kyle Padron. Turns out me wanting to believe something is true doesn’t make it so:

Southlake Carroll quarterback Kyle Padron did get a call, but not from Tony Romo. Padron said it was from Richard Bartel, a family friend, who did offer some encouragement.

Bartel, in case you aren’t familiar, is the Cowboys’ practice squad quarterback. Whether or not a horse was involved is still uncertain. Developing.

From 5atexasfootball.com:

Senior QB Kyle Padron (6’3) takes over the controls of the Dragon machine. Padron backed up Dodge last year and passed for 326 yards on 33-53 accuracy with two touchdowns and three interceptions. Padron added 258 yards rushing (5.5 ypc) and 2 TDs. Padron is similar in stature to former Dragon QB Greg McElroy (2005).

Putting someone in place to deliver passes to those players means replacing a great leader and talented athlete in Riley Dodge, Carroll’s starting quarterback the last two years. Even though his heir-apparent has yet to start a game, Wasson said incoming senior Kyle Padron will benefit from the role he played last year backing up Dodge and getting into several games in the second half.

"Kyle Padron is doing a good job of running the offense, making the throws and reading the defense," Wasson said. "He’s had an outstanding spring. He’s very composed in the pocket. He’s made several athletic plays and shown us his versatility."

Wasson said Padron would have been ready to take the reins as a junior, but the Dragons were still blessed to have the services of Dodge last fall.

"Kyle would have started for a lot of teams a year ago, but he was playing behind a great player," he said. "He knows it’s his time now. He’s kept his focus. I’ve seen him improve in all areas."

As far as gamling goes, you can do a lot worse than betting on the QB at SLC. We get in there early and get the committment when we're the only ones really looking at him (an assumption on my part) while everyone else is taking a "wait and see" approach. If we "wait and see", and he's highly successful, we'll probably wait and see him sign somewhere else in February.

I had hoped for someone with more starting time, but at this point... at least he's tall.

From what I'm told, we were the only DI to offer. UNT really wasn't going to do much with Riley Dodge being up there with dad.

That said, this is similar to when Greg McElroy followed Chase Daniel, except McElroy was very good aggressive about getting his name out there. Kyle probably needs to work on his deep ball but he can make all the throws.
