Secondary Rivals Ratings Coming In

Postby Stallion » Mon Jul 28, 2008 7:26 pm

It looks like the kids rated 5.4 and 5.3 have been added. In addition to Darrius Johnson and James Scott who are rated 3 star and 5.5the following have been given the secondary rating in addition to being 2 stars. :

Chris Atchison 5.4
Bryan Collins 5.3
Chris Frazier 5.3
Wayne Frazier 5.3
Ben Hughes 5.4
Braylon Williams 5.3

Again your basic CUSA West recruiting class-certainly nothing spectacular. Maybe a tad better in the middle than "some" of Phil Bennett's classes. TCU which has what may be called a "great" non-BCS Class has a single player rated 5.3 the entire rest of the Class is rated 5.4 and above with 10 players rated 3 stars and over including 2 Four Stars.

Which would not be all that exciting if coaching didn't matter.

Betcha a few names get moved up to 3 stars before it's over.

A good position coach and a year in the weight room can turn a 5.2 into a 6 in a lot of cases. Like 3 running backs out of CUSA last year. I dont think they were rated that high out of hs. Also I will take a 5.3 player out of a good
5A conference over a *** out of a double A school. TCU get a lot of players from small schools

you guys can argue all day that coaching makes a difference (which it does), but stallions whole point is that we will never be a top 25 team recruiting sleepers... i absolutely believe JJ style of play can win games based on limited talent; however, stallion is trying to say we will not be a consistent top 25 team based on sleeper recruiting (which i agree)... so we can all get our pom-poms out and be excited about the class we are getting but based on the rating sites we are getting killed by TCwho

Unfortunately, Stallion has been right. I just think we shouldn't expect too much after twenty years of mediocrity from June...he has been here only about six months.

I do have some problems with the ratings of 16 and 17 year old players that haven't played a down as a high school senior. I buy that the very best recruits can be easily identified, but to judge the majority of young men that haven't even started their senior seasons, seems a little premature. I feel that the ratings game may be less accurate than in years prior when the real recruiting occurred during and shortly after they finished their last high school seasons. not at the conclusion of their junior year.

Now MexMustang has hit the nail on the head what happens to growing males in the years 16-18 the senior year brings a lot of changes to hs player.

Recruiting Guru - who actually watches games and tapes, I gather, and has some level of expertise - has not weighed in here on this. Let's not confuse the two.

He did it at Hawaii and I can guarantee you they didn't have top 25 caliber recruiting classes.

Very true. Remember its going to take a 7-5ish/New Orleans Bowlish season or two before we start thinking we could be top 25 material. If JJ can get a few good kids in here to get us to a low rung bowl game then he'll get some more kids who are better than the kids who got us to the low rung bowl games.
Larry Brown? We have Larry Brown? Cool!

Which is have five winning seasons and you are an established program.

This maybe a stupid question (Ive been known to ask one or two) how do you rate a kid that has played only one year of varsity ball before his senior
year and say he is a 5.8 etc. He could be playing easy beats his junior year and look bad his senior when the team plays a harder schedule with better teams.

Stallion's knowledge of the ranking/recruiting of college football players is second to none on this site... even if he comes off as an @ss proving people wrong he always backs it with factual data...

i love how you failed to bold, underline, and italicize the part where i said consistent top 25 team... the point is consistency... like my post said i believe jones style of play can generate wins with limited talent, but if smu wants to be a consistent top 25 team we need step it up.... but you failed to bold, underline, and italicize that part of my post too

That certainly is the case sometimes. I think the point some people are trying to make is that it may well be much easier and much more frequent that you turn a "5.5" into a "6.0" guy.

Also, no one is saying that JJ has to have top talent to produce a winning football team, but the fact of the matter is that with top talent we could become a great football team much more quickly. Non-conventional offenses (and great coaching) are a great way to get the most out of your players. However, starting with some blue chip prospects would only help the cause.

That is almost a given. Last season I believe that 2 of our 4 3-stars were guys that started out at 2-stars. In 2007 I believe that 3 of our 4 3-stars started off as 2-stars.
