Shades of Jessie Armstead and Odell James?

Those of you who have a few gray hairs might remember when Jessie Armstead held his Signing Day press conference in a hot tub, or when El Paso QB Odell James (inexplicably labeled the No. 1 player in the nation by ... someone) convinced several schools they had landed him, prompting the head coaches at Baylor, Texas and Nebraska (and someone else, but I can't remember who) to show up at his high school on signing day.
Now there's a video on the DMN site about Garland (Naaman Forest) safety Terrence Bullitt. Talented kid who's been recruited by several schools, including SMU, I think. They have him standing in the locker room, he announces he's going to commit, and the reporter asks where. He holds up a hat for Texas A&M (where his brother played) ... and then throws it away. Then he holds up a hat for Oklahoma State and throws it away. Finally, he puts on a Texas Tech hat and does that stupid "guns" signal.
I don't begrudge a guy enjoying this, since everyone not named Ganaway only has one chance to commit. But before throwing away the hats of other schools, go make a few plays. I would bet those schools remember it. Yes, it's just a kid being a kid, but that move has no class and I'd suggest is not the smartest thing he could do, either.

I think the 'burning bridges" line fits in there.

Indeed, except Odell James went to Aldine MacArthur. Best high school athlete I ever saw in person.

A) His high school doesn't matter.
B) There's a right way to do things and a wrong way - this is the wrong way.

No surprise he picked Lubbock, really. I'm sure he wanted to just maintain the same quality of surroundings he's used to from living in Garland.
I went to GISD schools (Rowlett) - Lubbock isn't much of a step down from most of Garland.

At least Jessie didn't go out and rob a bunch of video stores.

Wasn't Gary Edwards in the Hot Tub with him?

I thought it was actually Derrick Evans who was more highly recruited and signed with Tennessee. Evans (and I think Edwards who signed with Arkansas) ended up in the jailhouse.

I was actually thinking there were 3 or 4 of those guys that wound up in jail. Had an armed robbery ring going.

I found this on a google search. Some message board.
Derrick Evans and Gary Edwards were two more players from the infamous 1988 Dallas Carter team who had NFL talent but ended up in the slammer for armed robbery. Evans had signed with Tennessee and Edwards with Houston. Armstead was quoted as suggesting that Evans would have been a top 10 pick and Edwards was a 2nd round guy. Of course, Armstead was one of the best defensive players in Texas HS football history, went to Miami, and on to the NFL. Clifton Abraham was a star at Florida State, Greg Hill was a star at Texas A&M, and Leshai Maston was awesome at Baylor before they headed to the NFL.
