even though nothing is official where do you rank this class post dp based on actual information/ratings of players. and could you also discuss the highs and lows of each class based on the "highly ranked" recruits. i realize this requires a serious amount of time and information to provide a detailed answer, but some of us have not been following SMU's recruiting process to the same extent you have. thanks

Some thoughts and a few of the higher ranked recruits:

Chris Atchison *** rated about right. A little under-sized but plays with a lot of heart, probably better suited at C position.

Ryan Clark **** over-rated 7 picks as a freshman on a very good team, but fell apart as a sophmore and lost starting spot as season progressed. Lots of issues with him but if he can pull it together will be a nice pickup, but not 4 star.

Joey Fontana *** about right. Should move to OT, but needs work on agilty & footwork. Would like hima little taller but really a very nice pickup for the staff.

Darius Johnson *** Questionable, size is a huge concern and whether he can add the weight and maintain the speed. Good hands and moves well but not physical enough.

Marquis Frazier *** Iffy at best. Great athlete but not consistent on the field. If you can live with his mistakes and accept him for the plusses he brings then fine. Spot player rather than an every down athlete at this point. Can add bulk to his frame with some work and had some very good quickness.

Deonte McDade *** May be the steal for the staff. Fluid and athletic, he can play on either side of the ball. Needs to add some weight, but kid will do very well.

James Scott *** Another possible steal. I like Scott a lot and not sure why he didn't get more offers. Good size and speed, defends the pass well and when he stays on his feet he is good against the run as well.

The most underrated has to be Braylon Williams. Kid needs to add a little weight and get a little quicker, bt he is going to be a good one.

Overall, I think there are too many reaches, especially in the OL recruits, but if a few hit then you have a nice class.

Darius Johnson size is no issue whatsoever in SMU's offense at an Inside Receiver. Sometimes a recruit is a bluechipper for one offensive formation and not another. A great example of that was Turner Gill who nobody but Osborne at Nebraska and Switzer at OU wanted because he was an option QB not a Pro-Style QB. Blue Chipper but hardly anyone in Texas even knew his name.

Johnson would not fit in most Big 12/BCS offenses at Receiver because he is not 6-1 or 6-2 but I've followed this kid closely and seen a lot of film on him-he is UNDERRATED for SMU's offense. Great open field runner who is going to get his YAK. I'd say he might be around 5-10.5 or so.

If I was grading Johnson based on SMU's offense ONLY I would definitely upgrade him to maybe a 5.6 or 5.7 and higher than McDade. I have no problem with Rivals rating on him because they are looking at the bigger picture-and he wouldn't really fit into the plans of many bigger schools. That's why he made a great decision to attend SMU and not one of those other schools.

I am really hyped about Padron throwing to Johnson & McDade.
I think that stands out as the highlight for me.

The concern is a quality rb & d line. Hoping for a few surprises he @ the end.

And I also agree that my biggest concern in our recruiting class is not only DL but at RB!!! We have nothing if butler gets hurt! Lee and Lunday may get better but they are too small to play all game. So that leaves us with Goldthorpe. Speaking of him does anybody know of his progress? Also im hoping maybe Zach Line can play Rb. He had 1700 yards senior year of HS. Our roster does say we picked up a big walk-on RB (or FB i guess) that is like 6-2 230.

The problem with Johnson isn't the 5'10" or 5'11", its his 160 lbs when in full pads. He isn't physical enough to battle for the ball and though I like his receiving skills overall, I do not see him performing well in div 1 without adding significant strength.

Certainly he is young and we can judge him on his potential, but right now he is overrated. Whether he can make the transition after time in the weight room is open, but bottom line is there isn't really time to let players develop.

If I had my druthers I would have sat most if not all of last years class and let them get bigger and stronger before putting tem out there to take a beating. Another path was taken and we shall see how that works out, but needs are urgent and I don't see how Johnson can see the field for 2 or 3 years and perform at the necessary level.

Aldrick Robinson seems to fare well at 5-10 170.....
