Doesn't matter. All teams have structure. This isn't the NBA. We don't run an iso and let a player break their defender down. We can use about 30 schools as examples that run great systems that still have players who take the open look to the hole.
The day Harp breaks down his defender in an iso play is the day I start wearing his jersey to games. Harp was brought here to be a great defender, shooter, and hussle guy. I like his game for those reasons. Haynes is yet to be determined.
Your slasher not only should be able to score, but also distribute. Williams does a great job of that. Disrupt the defensive set and find the open man. One problem. Williams is a junior, we only have him one more year.
Would be nice to have an off guard who has his same nose for the basket.
haha yeah im everyones parent, im the team mom - but your forgot poor maag. back from lala land, id like to know (since the number of posts you make clearly equals your knowledge of the game) what offense we do run? and im not talking about iso's, i believe i said when it is necessary players should feel free to attack the basket instead of worrying about whether doherty will be upset if they break the offensive set. i've been on the inside i know this is the problem, not the talent of the players. and i feel sorry for you if you feel this way, but if you think derek williams is what we're looking for as far as a slashing 2 guard, smu basketball is doomed[/quote]
Since this is your first year of watching basketball, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. This team with McCoy and Williams is the best guard play we have seen this decade. It's not ideal, but it is the best. We have really never had a true PG that can run the offense and bring the ball up without multiple turnovers a game. And please nobady bring up Bryan Hopkins. He was a 2 guard in a point guard's body. In the past, teams would press us on every made basket because they new we would turn it over.
On your comment about my words concerning Williams being a great slashing 2 guard. He fills that role for now, but is not the size of Haynes. We will have defensive issues against bigger 2 guards in league play. That's why I feel we need those players. Williams and McCoy are point guards playing at the same time always making the other play out of position.
You can bring all of the names that Coach D uses for the offense, but at the end of the day we run out of a true motion (if the defense is in man). I've seen us run some overload packages when the other team is in zone. Pretty basic stuff. Would like to see more back picks and cuts to the hoop. That type of anticipation comes with a more veteran team who has played together. Would also like to see more picks under the hoop. Tell me how much better Bamba's and Papa's stats would look if they were catching the ball off screens under the hoop.
Trust me, I'm no armchair quarterback (point guard for this example). I've played the game against some pretty high competition in the DC area. As mentioned by EastStang, the WCAC league has some of the best bball in the nation. We were playing against Dematha type schools every night.
Lastly, I did not include Maag because he is no longer on the roster.
