McDermott and Williams leaving NMSU

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - New Mexico State quarterback J.J. McDermott is transferring to SMU and receiver LaVorick Williams will leave for Texas Tech, new coach DeWayne Walker said Tuesday.

Walker met with both players and discussed their opportunities. Both decided transferring was in their best interests.

McDermott, the Aggies’ backup the past two seasons behind Chase Holbrook, played in four games last fall and started once as a freshman in 2007. With Holbrook graduating, McDermott had been the expected starter for next season until former coach Hal Mumme was fired in December.

Williams played in nine games at receiver and returned kickoffs. He plans to participate in track and field, not football, at Texas Tech.

I like this pick up. Doenst NMSU run a similar offense? And he was 2nd string because Hollbrook (spelling) was ahead of him and was a good qb. He is a walk-on too so it wont hurt to try him out as he isnt taking up a scholarship. My only question is that it says he played his fresh and soph year. But did he have a redshirt year already? Cause being he will have to sit out and lose a year i am curious if we will get him 1 or 2 years.

Don't rile Professor X (er Xtc) up? You get 5 years-he's played 2 so he will sit in his Redshirt/Transfer year and have 2 years to play.

Hal Mumme ran a fairly pass-happy offense at NMSU, and this guy supposedly has a pretty big arm ... and the height that some seem to crave in a QB. He'll be a walk-on, too.

Something about him being a Rivals 2* from NM State prevents me from sharing in your optimism.

He was rated 5.1 coming out of high school. Of course, he now has some college experience, which has to count for something.

It is an interesting pickup in the sense that he was already in a pass-happy offense. New Mexico State had the 10th ranked passing offense in the country. Hal Mumme was the head coach there and Leach was an assistant for Mumme until Leach went to OU with Stoops and took the air-raid offense with him. So this kid has basically been running the Air Raid offense.

That is the only thing that makes this interesting to me.

For a walkon it is a mild somewhat interesting pickup-look what Tech has done with players who have played in a passing offenses for 4-5 years. Won't hurt none. He will be entering his 4th year of College Football and had two spring trainings and a season running June Jones offense before he can set foot on the field. He has experience playing in Lincoln Nebraska, has played well in some D1A games and has experience in 5-6 games. He provides some depth in future years.

and perhaps most importantly we now have someone to take Gamso's place running the scout team

I have to say, i'm still not sold on our QB. Not trying to be negative, just honest.
