HOUSTON - 24 hours after the University of Houston announced quarterback Blake Joseph decided not return for his final year of eligibility, a potential destination for him has developed.
Sam Houston State has asked for and received Joseph's release from Houston which gives the Bearkats the right to talk to him.
"We have received the necessary paperwork from the University of Houston," said Todd Whitten, Sam Houston State head football coach. "Now we can begin discussions with Blake."
Joseph is expected to graduate in May but still would maintain one year of eligibility.
He would be able to transfer to Sam Houston State and play immediately because the Bearkats are a member of the NCAA's Football Championship Subdivision.
Joseph was a back-up to starter Case Keenum at Houston in 2008 and also played receiver.
In 2007 Joseph was the Cougar's starting quarterback in five games. That season he threw for 1,324 yards and nine touchdowns. He also rushed for 109 yards.
During Joseph's career at Houston he played in 22 games, throwing for 1581 yards and 10 touchdowns.
