Where's the Beef?Bus can't be happy about this! I know that we are switching to a 3-4 defense but having only one DT in this class (2010), one in the previous class (2009), and 2 (including Evan) in the class before that (2008) is a recipe for a potential disaster. We appear set for the next 5 years, however, at WR and DB. Are we allowed to play two DBs on defense in place of a DT? I sure hope we don't have any injuries, academic casualties, or homesickness with any of the DL in any of these classes or we could be in some REALLLLL trouble!
Re: Where's the Beef?I think we ought to seriously check out DT Michael Wilcoxen the UT Transfer-probably no problems qualifying. I wouldn't be surprised if we already have considering his earlier interest in SMU in high school.

Re: Where's the Beef?I hear scuttlebutt that he has a health issue; that's the reason he's not playing anymore for UT. Don't know if it's true, and I have no way to confirm, but that's the scuttlebutt.

Re: Where's the Beef?Yeah, it's disconcerting that we have 3 maybe four DTs on the books right now.
Marquis Frazier Evan Huahulu Torlan Pittman Zac Thomas maybe? It's a damn shame that Henderson won't be around. -CoS
Re: Where's the Beef?By Henderson, do you mean DE Brandon Henderson or do you mean DE Braylon Williams? To my understanding Brandon Henderson is on campus. Also, Pittman has been moved to DE.

Re: Where's the Beef?
Recruiting D1 DT in HS is like finding diamonds in a gravel pit. In HS you might get by with a 5'10" to 6' 230 lb DT in D1 football you start at 6'1" 280 lb that is quick and start from that point. This years good crop of Texas DT is taken with the following schools taking the cream that has shown so far. a. UT=2 b.OU=2 c.Cal=1 d.Stanford=1 e. SMU=1 The JC route is also not looking to bright. http://jcfootball.scout.com/a.z?s=87&p= ... 22&yr=2010 With Tennessee getting two of the top four rated JCos, that said would it not be nice to get the 6'7" 370lb DT from Gulf Coast CC. Re: Where's the Beef?Blinn CC usually produces some decent DT prospects every year.
There will also be some kids(who we dont even know about yet) that will not qualify for 2009 and will end up at JCs. ![]()

Re: Where's the Beef?No one disagrees that we need some "beef" upfront and a RB or two. But, signing day is almost seven months away and I don't ever remember having 17 this early. There will be some fallout, both good and bad, alot has yet to play out given the amount of time left. This recruiting year is far from over.
Re: Where's the Beef?
I agree with you OZ that Texas, OU, and Cal may not have big numbers of DLs this year so far. However, they consistently pull 2 or more DTs in each recruiting class. Our class is reportedly almost full and we only have 1 guy that can play the middle. The DT numbers from Jones' previous classes are also weak as I pointed out, which starts to put our DLine behind the 8 ball. If we ever want to be a "Top 20" team, we will need to recruit more than LBs and DBs who are than converted to DL to be able to win. Rivals indicates that we have "0" offers out for DT. We do have 4 offers out to strongside DEs but several have indicated that they are not considering us. That said, to me Ryland Widener has to now be considered especially if he has lost the 50 lbs requested by our coaches as has been reported. I have also read that he really likes SMU. From all accounts, he is very strong (bench 350, squat 625), relatively quick (5.2 forty at 330 lb) and could be a good complement to O'Guinn on the line if he can maintain the reduced weight (280 lb). I would imagine that his forty time would also be improved with the reduced weight. A GPA of 3.25 should be good enough to get him into school especially if his test scores match the grades. My question is what is the sticking point on offering if, in fact, he has lost the weight? You might say we need to wait until he plays a few games in the fall, but if another college offers and he takes the offer it will be our loss. http://tinyurl.com/p5qum9
Re: Where's the Beef? Some of the OL fellas recruited over the last couple of years also played or can play some interior DL positions don't ya think? Atchison maybe?
"We have a great bunch of outside shooters. Unfortunately, all our games are played indoors."
Re: Where's the Beef? The fact that we have a good class this early is great for SMU and JJ and staff.
TU has 3 DT's this class and more than likely 6 or so on the team already. We really need to work on this position or accept JUCO's every year at this position. Or Clone Evan and make some genetic alterations!!!! Mustang Militia: Fight the good fight"
Re: Where's the Beef?Isn't Margus Hunt a DL when he's not a shot putter?
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna
