Miami QB Transfer Eyes SMU

Postby max the wonder dog » Wed Aug 26, 2009 8:06 am

From the Memphis Commercial Appeal:

"Former Olive Branch High quarterback Cannon Smith has left the University of Miami, and two Mid-South schools are under consideration to be his next destination.

The 6-foot, 205-pound Smith, who played in one game for the Hurricanes last year as a true freshman before getting hurt and receiving a medical redshirt year, exited Miami on Monday. Sources close to Smith, who starred as a senior at Olive Branch in 2006, said he is considering Mississippi State, Tennessee and SMU."

His dad is Founder and Chairman of FedEx, scholarship slots shouldn't be a problem.

Question-
For the sake of discussion, let's say he chose to come to SMU, but as a walk-on. Would he still have to sit out a year, or does that only apply to scholarship players?

Looks like the SMU coaches have a prior relationship with the young man. Says he chose Miami over Memphis, Hawaii, Middle Tennessee State and Tulane. Played season opener last year, got hurt and received a medical hardship his freshman year. Video looks like he can run and throw.

Was the number one ranked prep school QB by scout when he committed to Miami from
Hargrave.

Had some off the field incidents before going to Hargrave. Kind of sounds a bit like the situation with Colt Brennan.

Good point, he could walk on because money is not the issue.

Cannon Smith took *two* recruiting trips...to Miami and to Hawaii. He was going to walk on to Hawaii instead of take a scholarship from elsewhere, but Miami won the recruiting battle. Colt Brennan walked on to Hawaii instead of taking a scholarship offer from SJSU, so there was some precedence for JJ's walk-on recruiting push.

He shouldn't have any problem fitting in at SMU.
