NG's DT's At SMUIf you are a large young man with quick feet and love to dance the night away... You need to come to SMU and play for the MUSTANGS.
I you are a large young man with quick feet and want to get a GREAT education and have the sweet life for as long as you live... You need to come to SMU and play for the MUSTANGS. BTW large is defined by over 5-11 and over 280 pounds... quick means a 40 under 5 and you have to be good at dancing. " The Quick Step like Warren Sapp " Remember what SMU stands for????? Re: NG's DT's At SMUyou just eliminated Jerry Ball and Harvey Armstrong 2 of our best DLM ever . Ball came in at about 6-1-245 and Armstrong 6-2, 255

Re: NG's DT's At SMUhe was refering to JUCOs who might come in and anchor this defense right away...right?
Re: NG's DT's At SMU
a real selling point for recruits... ![]()
Re: NG's DT's At SMUJerry was barely 6 feet tall, but he weighed 255 when he got here, and got up to around 280.
Re: NG's DT's At SMU
But that was so long ago and the OL was average of 270 I would guess.....the 300 pounders weren't commonplace back then.
Re: NG's DT's At SMU
My freshman year the starting o-line averaged about 265. Real size in the offensive line had just started to rise at that point. The Pitt team we played in the Cotton Bowl had 280 pound linemen, and they seemed huge. Nebraska had really big linemen then, as well, and they seemed to start the trend upwards. David Richards was our first 300 pounder, he was a freshman in '84. If I recall, David was the first offensive lineman to be named High School POY by Parade Magazine.
Re: NG's DT's At SMUBut the point is that both Jerry Ball and Harvey Armstrong turned into 280+ studs. Chris Parham was 245 when we signed him. I'd bet Adrian Haywood was about 250-260 out of high school at the most. Go do a search for DTs who are rated above 5.3-or do a search for Texas DTs who have at least 1 offer-there ain't much left except a Blinn Juco who is a stud and I can't see any interest in SMU. Defensive Tackle is the hardest position in Division 1A Football to recruit-luckily we got a good one. So you're probably going to have to find a sleeper, look somewhere else or find a kid with the frame to grow into a stud. Again, I'm not a big fan of slugs that are not mobile and I think most Division 1A coaches are not either. CUSA level teams often have to project players to the next level. TCU does it all the time and turns players who never played their positions or even Defense and usually has one of the best defenses in the country.

Re: NG's DT's At SMU
No I got the point and you are so right about DT's and both mentioned turned out well at the time and the signing of Harvey Armstrong out of tough Houston Cashmere (sp) was the signee that really turned the tide for recruiting for SMU back then. And the luxury of TCU is once you have a good Defense and sign several years of good recruiting classes you are able to redshirt those 'projects' and get some meat on them and groom them for the D line. With several years of good recruits at SMU we will see some 'projects' that are able to get strong, add size and make a difference. We are having to play freshman because we just don't have that luxury yet of redshirting those really good prospects. The JUCO signing of Frazier was a real find.
Re: NG's DT's At SMUAnd we need three more JUCO's to get ahead of the redshirting curve.
