Van Vleck graduate Mike O'Guin made it official Wednesday morning at the VVISD administration building by signing to play football at Southern Methodist University in Dallas.
O'Guin, finished his academic requirements in December and starts classes at SMU on Jan. 19. He will participate in offseason drills and conditioning.
"It means a lot to me and it's been a long time coming," said O'Guin. "I put a lot of hard work in the classroom and on the field."
"I'm ready to get into practices to get a chance to play my freshman year. It's great to represent Van Van Vleck High School at a major university." http://baycitytribune.com/story.lasso?ewcd=c7e81088979ce3bd

Thanks for the link. Glad they took off one of our losses and said we finished 8-4.

Is O'Guinn the only one that we have enrolling early or are there others? This is the growing trend. I think Texas and Florida typically get about one-third of their classes to come early.
It makes perfect sense because you can go through spring and transition easier into the college game than you could if you showed up for unsupervised workouts in early June and then go faster when fall workouts begin in August.

Am I correct in assuming that although he will be enrolling in January, he has not really signed with SMU yet. As a freshman he can't sign until February...right?
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

Yeah I'm glad someone figured out we really didn't lose that darn Washington State game after all...

You are correct. A lot of HSs do these just to honor the players and coaches since they will not be in school on the official signing day.

I thought that if you had finished your HS requirements and were going to be enrolling you could sign early. Afterall, if he is already going to be in class before signing day, something has to be signed.

Interesting. I thought you could sign before Feb as long as you graduated H.S. or J.C. in December. I will have to look more into this..

I am with you on this one. Also, the scholarship money is already being paid to the college before Feb.

the article said he signed didn't it-of course you can sign early in your are entering at mid-term. Technically it can count for last years class too if there were spots remaining under 25 man limit-could be since so many didn't qualify.

Now, that we have an answer, do we know if he is the only one to enroll early? I gather he is....little help.

They did not address early HS grads at all. Interesting because we are starting his scholarship now and like Wuba said something had to be signed.
And no GSP, there are no other early grads this year
