That would be Madill RB Darryl Fields. When you get a kid of this caliber, you get a little antsy. Admittedly, I got a little tense when his name didn't appear until 9:37 a.m. on the web site.

Also pretty cool that Kaiser was the first one to sign and it looked like I-chart (the OL in California) did his right away.

Nice to have those three coming with the rest of the class coming in.

BTW, I keep hearing that these kids from NOLA will likely start at a JUCO.

It sounds like Fields is going to be a fantastic player for us. When he committed, I emailed a good friend who is obsessed with college football recruiting and asked what he thought of Fields. His response was, "You guys just hit the jackpot. Can you say first-year starter." And that was before Shawnbrey announced he was going pro.

I also love the fact that both our OL commits are in. They both look very solid.

MADILL — Two years ago, not many people outside of Madill knew the name of Darryl Fields. He was just another football player lost in the shuffle. Madill running back Darryl Fields committed to Southern Methodist. But after back-to-back great years at running back, Fields quickly became a can’t-miss prospect and universities nationwide quickly found out where Madill is.

Fields was already one of the best runners around when he added another dimension to his game, playing linebacker last season for the Wildcats.

His versatility to go with his size (6-2, 205 pounds) and speed had the offers rolling in, and Fields committed to Southern Methodist in early December.

"I want to be a part of a program where I could help build something,” Fields said. "I was completely comfortable while I was there. I can’t wait.”

Fields also had offers from Tulsa, Texas Tech, Rice, Colorado, Arkansas, Kansas, Kansas State and North Texas.

It would have been easy for Fields’ head to swell. He dominated in his senior season, rushing for 1,495 yards and accounting for 30 total touchdowns. He averaged more than 10 yards per carry. His upbringing kept him grounded.

"That’s not the way my dad brought me up. He always taught me team first, and the rest will take care of itself,” Fields said.

It’s still pretty remarkable as Fields wasn’t even a running back until two years ago when coach Kerry Roberts saw what a special talent Fields is.

Fields is hoping he’ll be able to stand out in a crowd at SMU just like he did at Madill. The Mustangs are coming off an eight-win season and their first bowl appearance in 25 years, a win in the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl.

And with SMU running back Shawnbrey McNeal foregoing his senior year and deciding to enter the NFL draft, Fields will be a contender to play from day one.

"There are so many things that make Darryl such a special person, but it starts with his character and work ethic,” Roberts said. "He’s very coachable, and he’s always listening.

"Even when you’re talking to someone else, he’s always paying attention and wanting to learn how to get better. He’s still maturing, but he’ll never stop working.”

Fields won’t be alone Wednesday as wide receiver Kevin Roberts and linebacker Brad Avery will sign with Southwestern.

"It’s going to be a great day for myself personally and for the school. It’s great to see these kids get this kind of recognition,” said Kerry Roberts, Kevin’s father.
