Canyon and Swope

Postby 1983 Cotton Bowl » Wed Feb 03, 2010 1:35 pm

Interesting how these two, who were among the first to commit, suddenly de-committed right before signing day. I'm curious whether it was a situation where SMU offered them early, but then found that they were attracting a higher-caliber of prospect as the recruiting season went on and "encouraged" these guys to look elsewhere to open up spots. Any sense if that is what happened?

I'm assuming since this news is several days old and SMUMustangs.com is actually posting names of prospects as they sign for free, that this would not at this point be considered "subscriber info." If so, that's fine. Just curious about these guys.

Canyon is going to Northwestern St because they're going to give him the opportunity to play quarterback. If he had come to SMU, he would have been converted to linebacker or D-line.

I don't know about Swope, but I think he saw the writing on the wall with all of the other solid DB recruits we were bringing in after him. Plus his brother plays at Texas A&M

Swope was injured and didn't want to accept a greyshirt and Canyon wanted to play QB instead of DE/LB.

I'm new to PF, but i do have some information regarding Swope. I met him personally this weekend, he stopped by our house, I talked to him for a bit. He told me he was definitely coming to SMU. Not sure how valid that was, but there is my two-cents on what is going on.

WDNWHA committee has a great story on its website, but it is subscription only.
