This kid is good enough to help us get there though.......with the other 3 signees and LLoyd at the helm....we could at least be a contender next year to make some post season play, if not the NCAA.
I read on another board that Coach Doh was at his house this last week working Lloyd and his family.

God knows I'm about ready for it.

Yes...but...this kid wants to go to a team that is tournament ready. It's going to take more than a good freshman class to get us to that point in the near future. Now if he is willing to wait a few years he may be willing to commit to SMU, but I'm not going to hold my breath. You can if you want.

None of those teams are very good.

Let's be real here. I love lil Jon Loyd, but he's a 5'7 PG that is benefitting by playing the process as long as possible. If he could even sniff 6', he'd be a top 50 national player. As is, they are scratching and clawing for bad high major offers.

We're not a tourney squad yet, but we have solid talent, provided everyone gets through the clearinghouse. Get a PG that understands the tempo we're going for, and we get a lot more dangerous. Maybe Loyd is that kid, maybe not, but I don't begrudge him for wanting to play at the highest level. That said, at this point, he may opt for competition level over education, ability to get on the court from Day 1 etc. His choice, but some of the schools he's looking at are in shambles w/coaches no more likely to be there beyond next year, then Doh.

I've looked at the returning rosters and classes comin g in next year, and CUSA isn't that burly. We have enough talent to be very competitive. That said, Floyd is starting to make his mark at UTEP.

Enough talk about 5'7 PG's. The PG position can be run effectively by a good PG, of ANY size if he possesses the leadership qualities and toughness that someone like LLoyd has. He can make any team a notch better by involving the whole team, nothwithstandiung the fact that he can shoot as well as drive the paint. If he drives and kicks like a good small PG then he will be kicking out to the two new recruits that can face up shoot and he will also draw in the defense so that when he kicks out the PF's can have the opportunity to drive in for less resistant lay ups. Being 5"7 is a liabilty on defense being matched up against bigger PG's obviously but with the match up zone that SMU uses it becomes less of an issue.
It's been a long time since we had a good take charge PG with an attitude. Lets hope we get someone like Lloyd or Fabyon at the helm, 5'7 or 5'8 or not.

Supposedly we already signed a very average point guard....he is visiting this weekend...

He can take the outlet and put pressure on the defense because he pushes the ball with such great pace. He has a good handle and can get in the lane with his hesitation dribble. He moves the ball well and has the ability to run the offense when needed. Samarripps turns over the ball when he tries to force the issue in traffic or when he has tunnel vision on his penetration and misses an open shooter and passes to a player that is already defended. He can knock down open shots with time and can beat defenders to the rim with his quickness for an uncontested layup. Samarrippas plays with great effort on defense as he pressures the ball and plays the passing lanes. Samarrippas has good upside and all the tools to be an affective lead guard on the college level.

This is weird as why didn't anyone hear about this kid before..He IS the Class 5A Player of the Year for all of Florida supposedly. But information for him is hard to come by on line which is strange and why wouldnt he have signed somewhere else before now?

Disagree that height in the point guard does not matter. The passing lanes are entirely different - there are just more options for the taller point guard. And as you pointed out you can get some tough mis-matches on defense if one of the 5 defenders is a smurf. If the best we can grab is 5-9 then fine - but you would prefer to not have any guard under 6 ft.

Hard and fast rules regarding the size of PGs, or anyone, doesn't make much sense at the mid major level. If a 5'9 kid has an extra gear, see Fab & Loyd, no worries. I saw loyd vs Kendall Marshall, McAA PG going to Carolina, at the Beach Ball Classic, and he towered over Loyd. Loyd also forced him into a career high 8 to's in one game. Match-ups go both ways. Marshall couldn't keep Loyd out of the lane to save his life etc. Nobody is backing down mighty mites in college, or living off an ISO to exploit the size disadvantage, it's too easily masked in a coaches game.
