Actually three of these guys have SMU offers (Simmons and Peyton also have offers). I'm glad that we are going after the best California has to offer, but I would love to know why we don't focus more on in-state recruiting. Recruiting studs from CA won't put butts in seats the way that signing local standouts would.

my guess is if we had a three-time Super Bowl winner who was our O-line coach that played HS ball in Dallas and had all kinds of Dallas and by extension Texas connections, we'd be going after more in state.

The big xii cartel/mystique seems a tougher nut to crack but winning will help resolve that.

nonsense, TCU has bneen whipping multiple Big 12 schools for about 65% of its recruits for each and every year from Day 1 when Franchione took the TCU job in 1998. SMU has a great coaching staff -but if it has a weakness it is lack of the Texas contacts and connections that the other schools in Texas have. You get a recruiter in DFW, Greater Houston or East Texas with the same connections and vibe with the kids that Klemm has in California then you'll see more success in Texas. Recruiting is about 1 on 1 connections between coaches and recruits. Remember that camp tour last year where comments were made about lack of quality turnouts at just about every stop. Use the Rivals mapping application which allows you to map where recruits are coming from. SMU isn't recruiting California-its essentially recruiting within a 50 mile radius North and South from LA which is where Klemm has his contacts. You find the right guy in Texas-SMU can succeed recruiting in Texas and especially in DFW with that right Coach. See what is happening in BB recruiting too.

I agree that it would be great to get a coach with Klemm's types of connections in North/East Texas. I thought it would be interesting to see how our coaches recruits compared to each other.

Using the recruiting coach listed on Rivals, I averaged stars and points for each coach.

The players without anyone listed were Galindo, Sims, Longoria and Wood. I included Galindo in Klemm's count because I was pretty sure that was right. You hear this all the time. But seriously, what effect on attendance does having local talent really have? I'd think mere winning would have a far greater effect.

The further you get away from Dallas and Texas the better better reputation SMU has regarding the social atmosphere. We are not viewed as much as the snobby prejudice school like we are locally but in places like the west coast SMU is viewed just as a school that gives you a really good education. That is the ugly truth.

I've always felt like SMU was more a midwest school, and now a California school, than a local or even Texas school. That tends to isolate us a bit.

SMU will continue to grow its student body from the midwest and CA. I graduated in 1981 and it had a significant contingent from outside TX.

Now it has grown substantially and with the TX job market outpacing the rest of the country plus UT now admitting more less than top 10 students, the out of states will continue to become more significant.

Like athletes and winning, i don't care where the students come from as long as they are smart and can become successful alums that give back to SMU.

Being in Dallas is an incredible draw for SMU.
