The Bellaire (Texas) quarterback gave his commitment to SMU a few weeks ago. But he still is expected to visit -- perhaps this weekend -- with a coach from Dartmouth.

For the record, he is:

• 6-foot-2

• 190 pounds

• 4.6 in the 40, but may be quicker than that -- ran away from a lot of opponents this year

• Completed 74-of-174 passes this year for 1,173 yards, 11 INT and 10 Touchdowns (including a season-long touchdown pass of 73 yards)

• Rushed 86 times for 223 yards and 4 Touchdowns, including a long of 63 yards. (His rushing total is a little skewed, because although Nixon is very fast, he plays on a sub-par team that has essentially no offensive line. He actually gained a lot more yardage than that, but was sacked nearly 30 times and spent much of the season running for his life.)

Ashton Nixon is a tremendous athlete, and is being recruited to play quarterback, not jump to another position as some have suggested.

He runs a 4.5 in the 40-yard dash, and spent much of the season running because of a thin offensive line that didn't allow him time to pass.

Very fast and strong, with good size -- could be a very nice QB in a couple of years.

With Dartmouth being an Ivy League school, they never were really in the running. He chose SMU over Houston, Louisiana Tech and Oklahoma State. Good pickup for the Ponies.
