SMU found a late addition to its 2011 recruiting class in running back Jared Williams, whose résumé would suggest that he would have been a hot commodity in February. Williams visited with PonyFans.com to discuss the unique set of circumstances that allowed him to fly under the radar and end up signing to play with SMU, starting in 2011. Enjoy! The comparison — at least the visual comparison — to Emmitt Smith is eerie, but of course calling anyone "the next so-and-so" is an injustice to both.
But this guy does sound like a very talented player who really slipped through the cracks, and with Zach Line's back issue from last year, who knows how many RBs we'll need.
Great story, Pride, and welcome to the Hilltop, Jared!

Really? Comparing this kid to the Parade High School Player of the Year who ran for 9,000 yards to a guy who had an offer from Wheaton? He ran for all those yards against teams that would get destroyed by a quality 5A Freshman team

Nobody said he's the same player. Uniform colors and number are the same. That's it.
Way to find a way to put down a Mustang, though.
And just so nobody forgets ... how many times have you seen the teams he piled up those yards against?
Good stuff, PP!

Its tough for a lot of Private School recruits to make it in D1. However, this guy was National Private School player of the year before his school shut down I guess, which says something....Who was the guy Coach Tom Rossley took back in the 1990s from Dallas Trinity Christian who played Cornerback at SMU and went on to play several years in the NFL ? Best private school story I remember here.

After Fields' decision to transfer and Pope's move to linebacker, this guy makes me feel better about the backfield. Line is the man, but this certainly helps the depth. Hopefully, Like stays healthy and we can redshirt both Nlemchi and Williams.
Welcome to SMU, Jared!

This sounds like a June Jones kind of player — someone who somehow slips through the cracks but has a chance to really succeed under his guidance. Good luck, Jared. Thanks, webguys

Good luck, Jared. I hope you become a stud ... we need it after Fields transferred - that's a bigger blow than I think people realize. How often do you find someone that big AND fast? ... I was really pulling for a NEW Pony Express backfield this year with Line and Fields ... could have been a great marketing campaign bc I think Fields was the real deal.
