Recruiting QBs

Why does it seem like we are having trouble attracting quality qb recruits under June? We've certainly gotten quality WR, RB, OL, DL etc. but we can't get the premiere position in this offense? I know other people have complained about this before - I was just curious if there was any rhyme or reason to it?

Its one of the more confusing aspects of the Jones era. Not only have we failed to garner interest from a bigtime HS QB prospect, but one of the guys we have now (Stephen Kaiser) sounds like he is downright TERRIBLE from practice reports. This was a guy who June was clammoring was one of the best HS QBs he has ever seen. Every practice report says that the damn walk on QB's are outperforming him.

Kaiser is coming back from mono.

Not surprising the passing from the young QBs with young WRs is off, this is a precision passing offense, takes reps.

Bet a beer SK never sees any significant playing time and never challenges for the starting job.

They probably don't want to have to run back to the sideline after every play

I was going to do a post about Padron.

Can't remember a year when more is riding on the back of one player than this year with Kyle Padron. Could it be the difference between BCS and non-BCS membership? who knows, but if he plays beyond expectations, we are C-USA champs and if he plays below expectations, we will have a losing season, with that last home game against Rice in front of 6,000 fans, not good.

btw, someone tell me Plan B if Padron goes down to a season-ending injury Week 1?

If I were guessing, and it is a pure guess, I would think you would see McDermott against UTEP and then Conner would see action against Northwestern La and if he performed well he would take over.

Again, not having any first hand knowledge of anything, including where my car keys are, I am only speculating. And of course, we would at least not have to have the Memphis vs. Hawaii argument.

Yes, but they have been saying he isn't progressing for over a year now.

Seems the most likely outcome and not very encouraging considering JJ is entering his 4th year here.

From a purdy good discussion on the Rivals board:

Recruiting one QB each year when half of them don't pan out isn't exactly the best way to stockpile talent at the position. Competition and depth are a good thing, especially in an offense that slings it around as much as ours does.

Bo Levi Mitchell
Kyle Padron
Stephen Kaiser
Connor Preston

2/4 and we're looking at having CP, KP, and SK on roster with two of them legitimate candidates to see quality snaps.

I would think the plan is that by that time, CP will be a junior with two full years plus a spring in the system, he'll get some mop up duty between now and then, and he'll step right in to the starting QB role. Issue is, if Kasier doesn't pan out, and we're not going to grab a QB this year because the staff's targets went elsewhere, in 2013 that leaves us at:

QB1: RS-So/JR Connor Preston
QB2: RS-Ju Stephen Kaiser
QB3: 2012 Recruit/FR QB prospect

I would hope we grab a JUCO or transfer QB, that way going in to 2013 we have at least two upper class QB's to slug it out for the starting nod.

Over the last few year:

Justin Willis was moved to WR then left the program.
Winston Gamso transferred to Texas A&M.
Bo Levi Mitchell transferred after losing his starting job.
Braden Smith was moved to safety and eventually transferred to play QB.
Stephen Kaiser caught mono, lost almost an entire year and by all accounts is struggling mightily to grasp the playbook and make good throws on the field.

The point isn't to say all those losses could have been fantastic QB's for SMU. The point is to identify no less than five QB's during the Jones era that left or didn't pan out. To go in to 2012, or year FIVE of the June Jones era- umm who does tout a pedigree of being somewhat of a QB guru with Morrison, and only Preston and Padron as legitimate QB prospects on the roster isn't exactly a picture of roses and daises. Attrition will happen- sometimes when we don't expect it. If we go in to next year with the situation unchanged, that's nearly mind boggling.

It comes down to recruitng effort. How many Texas 3-4-5 star quarterbacks did we even meet?

I don't think Coach Jones has any current QB's that are in the NFL. He has O Linemen but no QB's that I am aware of. When we start putting more QB's in the NFL that's what will help our recruiting. Let's hope Kyle gets drafted on the first day and that will definitely help our recruiting IMO.

How does that help our QB situation in 2012, 2013, 2014 at all?

It doesn't. I was just talking about recruiting of future QB's.
