SMU has offered a scholarship to Sweeny, Texas safety Thomas Wright (5-11, 185, 4.6).

Considered one of the most athletic players in Texas, Wright also stars at RB for his team, and runs track, where as a junior he finished third in the state in the 110-meter high hurdles, third in the 330-meter intermediate hurdles and was a member of the state-champion 1,600-meter relay team. (He doesn't know if he's going to run track in college as well as play football.) On the gridiron as a junior, he had 117 tackles, seven pass break-ups and three interceptions. He plans to play defense in college.

Two things will make this a tough sell for Coach Cavan and his staff:
1. He is said to be inclined to leave Texas for college, with Oklahoma State having the early lead.
2. He is being heavily recruited. Thus far, he has scholarship offers from SMU, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas, Texas A&M, LSU, Iowa, UTEP, Arkansas, Oklahoma State and TCU. Nebraska has offered him scholarships in football and track.
