Friendswood’s Seaver Myers, a 6-6, 290-pound offensive lineman, has committed to play football for Southern Methodist University.

“He told them Sunday night,” Mustang head coach Steve Van Meter said. “He’s liked SMU all along, and after they beat TCU on the road Saturday, he liked them even better.”

Myers considered Utah, Louisville, Houston, Rice, Nevada and Texas-San Antonio before settling on the Mustangs.

“I imagine he’ll play left or right tackle for them,” Van Meter said. “Seaver has really improved his technique since last year. (Robert) Koopman’s (offensive coordinator) done a great job with him.

“Seaver’s feet are good, he uses his hands very well, and I’m sure they’ll want him protecting the quarterback’s blind side. At that level, you’ve got to be able to kick-step and defend a bull-rush.”

Myers injured his knee last season, but returned late in the 2010 campaign. He has played this year without any ill-effects of that injury.

“SMU is pretty prestigious university to get a degree from,” Van Meter said. “I think there were a lot of reasons he wanted to go there, and that was one of them. Obviously, it’s close, too, so his family can see him play.

“He’s a big, strong kid with good feet, and who knows, he may make some money some day playing football.”
