Word has it that the Mustangs are close to offering Steven Coleman(DT - from Skyline) a scholarship here in the near future. We'll have to see if they mean buisness. Here's some info Notre Dame, Miami, Florida, Oklahoma, Texas, Oklahoma St., A&M, TCU, UH, Texas Tech and Iowa St. have all informed me that they will offer Coleman within the next week or so.

This poor kid is going to have his hands full trying to make that decision....of course the best one would be to stay close to home (real close).

Coach Rob: an earlier post mentioned that Steven's top 5 choices had SMU as his only Texas school (along with LSU, Notre Dame, Fla & FSU). Sure hope he enjoys the Rivals camp at SMU and decides to stay home and be a difference maker for his home town school.

If he wants a great education, his decision is already made for him, at least out of that five. Notre Dame is OK, but SMU clearly is the cream of that crop. Coach Rob, tell him what a hometown star he can be at SMU.

And just curious, Coach Rob, when you say "We'll have to see if they mean business" - can you clarify that? Obviously this isn't like the pros, where teams can get into a bidding war. Having not been a recruited athlete in school myself, what can one school do to separate itself from the others in its scholarship offer?

Is it a matter of promised playing time? Guaranteeing scholarships to certain high school teammates?

Every school has something special about their institution. The key is to figure out what that special quality is and magnify it.
One of the most important aspects of recruiting a high school athlete, is honesty. I beleive that some college coaches forget that when they are evaluating
recruits, the recruits are evaluating them as well.

Thanks for the clarification, Coach Rob. Hope it all goes well for Steven -- and that he ends up at SMU!

I'm afraid you're thinking with your heart and not your head. The only place SMU exceeds Notre Dame academically is our Business school and even there the margin isnt wide. A good education can be had at the other schools as well, if a person really wants one. The problem at the big football factory schools is not the universities ability to offer a good education, but rather the demands put on the athletes time by his sport, and in bad advice from coaches and counselors who will steer athletes into easy but pointless classes, just to keep them eligible.

So? Did Coleman get offered at the Rivals camp over the weekend?

i'm pretty sure that coaches are not allowed to speak to any of the players at the rivals camp. i know that coach Bennett was not allowed to talk to him, and im pretty sure that the other ones were not allowed to either.
