Irving linebacker commits to SMU
08/10/2002

From Staff Reports

Irving linebacker Zach Hall (6-3, 225) has orally committed to SMU.

Oral commitments are nonbinding. The first day a football player can sign a national letter of intent is Feb. 5.

Hall chose the Mustangs over an offer from Iowa State.

Zach Hall is a stud, there's no other way to put it. He's one of thehardest hitters I've ever seen in about 30 years of watching high school football. When he hits someone, he'll remind older PonyFans of Putt Choate. Younger PonyFans might get reminded of Chris Bordano or Bill Kiely. He and D.D. Lee will put a lot of bruises on opposing running backs in the next few years.

This post is borrowed from the other site. Sounds like Zach Hall is a hell of a player.

Texas FB named him one of the Top 20 LBs in Texas and so he qualifiers as a member of their Top 140 Players in Texas. Texas FB says he runs a 4.6 and says he had 123 solo tackles and 61 assists. Hall is 6-3,225 4.7 benches 280, squats 475, has a 30 ft vertical leap and a 3.4 GPA. (I'm just reporting) SMU was his only offer according to Rivals(the report above said Iowa St-a Bowl Team also offered) so far but (my editorial) he was getting strong recruiting interest from a whole host of top schools like Ark, Iowa St, Neb, N.D. OU, Tex and A&M as well as a host of others. (if you look at some of the other schools he was interested they are among the Top 5,10 or 20 in the nation so the fact if true that he had not yet been offered by others is not that alarming when you realize he was being pursued by so many top schools. Rivals states that Zach is a dedicated hardworking football player who was named to the first team All-City in Irving. He had approximately 130 tackles last year and 4 sacks. His strong points are his mental toughness and his ability to hit. He describes himself as a big team player comparing his style of play to Zac Thomas of Tech and the Miami Dolphins.

BTW in case anyone didn't notice someone correctly noted that our commit Desmond Jones was named to the Third Team Texas Football squad which I guess arguably would make him one of the Top 70 players in Texas. They listed him at 6-2,260 while other reports list him at 6-0,270. Congratualtions to Coach Bennett on both of these guys.

Good to see a player from Irving in the fold. Hall hopefully is the first of many players who go from playing for Jim Bennett to playing for Phil Bennett.

For those who value such things, or who have respect for Dave Campbell and his magazine (which I don't), three of the four SMU commitments -- Desmond Jones, Zach Hall and Ricky Joe Meeks -- made Texas Football's "Texas Top 300" list. And Jones was named to the third team of the mag's Super Team.

The magazine is terrible, but it's nice to see SMU recruits getting some statewide recognition. Coach Bennett's recruiting is going well, so far, and it will only get better.

I recently saw Zach and his family, and his father is enormous - a good 4-5 inches taller than Zach is. Who knows how much more this guy will grow.
