Recruiting Methods

First let me say that I know little to nothing about the process, so my enlightenment last night may be "Ned and the First Reader" to the majority of you. Having said that, my son and I had dinner last night after the game with the lead recruiter and TE coach for USM. He expressed mild annoyance at the recruiting sites and told me, in so many words, their relevance is highly overrated. I think I was generally aware of this, but hearing this from a professional was confirmation. BTW, he also had previous experience at Oklahoma State, and was active in the recruitment of Taylor Thompson and others. But what really opened my eyes was the emphasis on relationships with the high school coaches. From his perspective this is where it all begins. The system USM employs to monitor this process is detailed and too involved to recite here, but needless to say I was impressed. All this to say that I now better understand Nick17 and others who have in the past opined on this subject. Don't really know how our coaches, or anybody else's for that matter, find time to recruit and coach - rigorous to say the least !

Probably so; however, His emphasis was on the ability of his "system" to sign 2 stars that are 3, etc.

It's a system southern miss can't utilize
Because they're southern miss 4 and 5 stars go to the big schools so the rest of us are just left wanting

It kind of reminds me of a guy that says he doesn't light beautiful women because he can't get one ;-)

Nice to meet you and your son.

Funny how things are different. In hoops, IF you spend one minute cultivating a relationship w/high school coach, over the more important people in the recruits life, you're crazy. Take Blaise for example, we had his AAU coach, Vandy had his high school coach. We win.

Either way, no matter time or place, every coach claims they want a higher caliber athlete. In hoops, SMU will tell you flat out they want high majors, not mid majors, despite being a high mid etc. Low majors want mid majors etc. High majors want national elite kids. Blue Bloods want McDAAs etc
