A big piece of the SMU Mustangs return to glory might have just fallen into place with one of its biggest commitments in recent history.
Hillsboro, Texas, running back Richuel Massey called the SMU coaches earlier this morning and let them know that he was officially a Mustang.
"He felt happy with the coaching staff at SMU," Bryan Erwin, Massey's coach, said. "He went up there for a visit and got to look around the games and just liked everything about it.
"They run the same offense we do, and he really liked the small campus atmosphere in a big city setting."
Another thing that sold Massy, according to his coach, is that SMU made the 5-foot-11, 220-pound three-star running back a big priority. While other schools, including Texas A&M, didn’t make him No. 1 on their list.
“He was a big priority on their list,†Erwin said. “They were open and honest with him from the start. I’ve known coach Bennett all the way back to his days at A&M, and I know that he’s going to be in good hands up there.â€
Massey had recently mentioned that he was holding out hope that an offer from A&M would be coming, but that offer never came and he ended up being solid on the Mustangs and their future.
“He liked A&M but was a little perturbed with their situation,†Erwin said. “He went over there to talk to coach Slocum and when he got there, coach wasn’t there. But he was SMU’s top back from day one and now he’s made a decision he’s very happy with.â€
Massey has racked up around 300 yards in two games already this season. He also had offers from Arkansas, Georgia Tech and Baylor and is ranked as the nation’s No. 42 running back.
