Arlington Lamar lineman commits to SMU
12/01/2002

By DAMON L. SAYLES / The Dallas Morning News

Arlington Lamar senior Ben Poynter has orally committed to play football for SMU.

Poynter (6-4, 250), a center for the Vikings, said the overall location, SMU's business school and first-year coach Phil Bennett were the primary reasons he chose the university over Pennsylvania and TCU. He also noted that his older brother, Justin, – a former Lamar standout offensive lineman – is a sophomore at TCU.

"My brother goes there, and I kind of wanted to break away from his paths," Ben Poynter said. "I've gone to the same school and the same classes as him all my life."

Poynter, a two-year varsity player, started his 23rd consecutive game on the Vikings' offensive line against Midland on Saturday. He is the second Lamar football player to commit to SMU this season. Running back Fred Turner committed to SMU two weeks ago.

Oral commitments are non-binding. The first day a football player can sign a national letter of intent is Feb. 5.

I thought someone had written here that he's not a scholarship guy, that he's going to walk on to the team. But this makes it sound like he's getting a scholarship. Anyone know which is true?

Get ready for TCU to deny that they were recruiting him.
