Baylor Mess

The situation at Baylor is a big mess. Supposedly they are going to hire the UK coach or at least that is the latest rumor. Does anyone know anything about him? Is the SEC falling apart ala the old SWC under the weight of so many scandals. They may have some guys committed who are having second thoughts.

Not so fast, my friend!

If you're referring to Hal Mumme, don't be so sure that the Baylor commitments are getting ready to jump ship. If there's one thing Mumme can do, it's recruit. Of course, the Baylor fans will go into mass seizures when they see Baylor actually throwing the ball. Mumme is a pass-first coach, which will make their offense more interesting than it ever has been. Of course, that doesn't mean he'll get the players necessary to knock off the UTs and A&Ms of the world, but he will give them a spark in Wacko, if in fact he gets the job.

The current UK head coach is Guy Morris who reprtedly will accept Baylor's offer of $1.3 million/yr. UK will be on probation for 3 more years. Sort of a Fran lite deal.

It's not every day that you see a private school outbid a Big State School for a head coach. If I can believe what I read Kentucky was paying Morris about 400k/yr. Baylor is going to pay him 3 times that amount. To me this is not necessariloy a bad thing. If the private schools want to play big time d-1 football and basketball they are going to have to get in there with their competitors and compete evenly with them. That means in coaches salaries as well as a host of other areas. Coaching is half the equation: great coaches + great players=equal great teams.

Guy Morris is leaving UK? For Baylor? Lexington for Waco? Lord what is this man thinking? At least he enjoys some success in the SEC. It's not like he's going to have a postseason at Baylor anyway!

It is 3x the salary and UK faces 3 more years of probation. I guess even Waco looks good under those terms. I doubt he will win there. With Fran on board at A$M, UT and OU also in the South, I don't think Baylor is going to be competing for any Big 12 South Chanpionships. Look for LSU and Arkansas to be the next SEC NCAA victims. If you see Saban making noises about leaving LSU you know the jig is up there and the NCAA is getting ready to pound them.

Even for three times the salary, I don't think I'd go from Kentucky - sanctions be damned - to Waco.
