Staking our claim and defending our turf

Maybe the most exciting part of the class we have so far, and some of the names that are still out there and considering the Mustangs, is the fact that Coach Bennett clearly has lived up to his promise to re-claim some of the better players in DFW and in the immediately surrounding areas.

Consider:
QB Ricky Joe Meeks (6'3", 210, 4.8) — Mount Vernon, Texas
OL Justin Boren (6'4", 280) — Colleyville (Heritage), Texas
DE Desmond Jones (6'0", 270) — Dallas (Carter), Texas
LB Zach Hall (6'3", 225) — Irving, Texas
RB Richuel Massey (5'11", 220, 4.4) — Hillsboro, Texas
OL Bryan Turner (6'2", 290) — Tyler (Lee), Texas
WR Blake Warren (5'8", 170) — Arp, Texas
OL Kenard Burley (6'4", 310) — Scurry-Rosser, Texas
OL Caleb Poveto (6'4", 275) — Flower Mound (Marcus), Texas
QB Chris Phillips (6'4", 220, 4.6) — Dallas (Bishop Lynch), Texas
RB Fred Turner (5'10", 170, 4.3) — Arlington (Lamar), Texas
OL Ben Poynter (6'4", 250. 5.0) — Arlington (Lamar), Texas

Of the guys who have committed so far, all except McGee are within DFW or East Texas, where Bennett Country has become Mustang Country.

Of those guys on the list that Corso wrote, 5 more are from the DFW area or East Texas.

DT/OL Cedric Cofer (6-4, 295, 5.0) DeSoto, Texas
DE Lucky Delay (6-4, 255, 4.76) — Irving (MacArthur), Texas
WR William Dowdy (6-5, 220, 4.5) Denton (Ryan), Texas
DT/OT Kendrick Pride (6-3, 350, 5.3) — Dallas (Skyline), Texas
QB/Ath Joel Armstrong (6-0, 170, 4.5) — Longview, Texas

We've all known that Texas is a fertile ground for football players, second only to Florida in recent years (and maybe California .... that's a different argument for a different time.) Every coach we've had in recent years, from Coach Gregg through Coach Cavan, has stressed the need to keep top players home to play for SMU. Coach Bennett is doing exactly that.

A couple of stats that stand out about the 5 you mentioned above that are still considering us:
William Dowdy of Denton Ryan is 6'5" and runs a 4.5. It would be great to have a WR with that kind of size and speed.
Kendrick Pride of Dallas Skyline is 6'3" 350!! That is a hoss and I love seeing us recruit DISD.
During this 10 day hoops break I have been following the job Bennett is doing in recruiting....the guy is getting it done.

He sure is. I can't remember the last time I was this excited about a recruiting class. I'm going to have to make a few trips to Dallas to see these guys on the field.
