Rivals lists him as 6-4, 230 and running a 4.6 in the 40.
Does anyone know anything about him beyond the hard numbers?

"Stallion" reported on the other board that if he comes in as a "mid-term commit" (which I assume means he would enroll at SMU in January) that he could count against the 2002 commitment limit, rather than the 2003 list.
How is that possible? Did we leave a scholarship unused last year?

So we got him from Missouri, Kansas and possibly even UCLA. Sounds like a nice pickup. Very impressive recruiting.

I guess this eliminates the whole "private school kids can't play" theory, right Cavan?

Rivals does list him as a player on UCLA's list of strong side DE recruiting prospects. I don't know how serious UCLA was about him but that list is generally a sign that there is some definite interst, especially for players 2 stars or better.

I think we are all taking this guy for granted. Rivals rates him as a 2 star, but we all know that is ONLY b/c he plays for a private school. If UCLA, Mizzou, and Kansas offered him, that is very impressive recruiting. In the article, Newman says he picked SMU b/c we had his major, interestingly enough, "cinema." Apparently he is entering college as a freshman this spring because he is graduating early from high school. I'm guessing that would count towards our 2003 class ? Is good to hear that he will be able to participate in spring ball...he also said that a major reason he came is because of Coach Roark. That guy is recruiting his [deleted] off in Oklahoma! What a great staff Bennett has put together!

This is just a guess on my part, but with a number of scholarship players leaving after last year's signing day, unless the coaches gave all the scholies away to walk ons, there ought to still be a few scholarships available from last year.

How many did we sign last year?

24 according to the PonyFans report, but then I still don't know if Gilray was ever actually on a scholarship...so that would be one more possible available scholie.
Does anyone know Donnie's status and whether or not we will ever see him in a Mustang uniform????

Hey, I wish young Gilray all the best, and I hope he can still come to SMU. But if we can somehow figure out a way to count this Newman kid against last year's total, that would be big-time recruiting work by Coach Bennett. If Newman doesn't cost us a scholarship in this year's class, he's a steal, because let me tell you, he can play. He is one of those kids who has so much energy he can't even sit still when he's not on the field. I went to the game when my nephew's team played against his team, and he said this Newman guy is a "get after it" kind of player. I'm not sure exactly what that means, but it sounds like he's got promise.

Hey I just wanted to post that Rivals upgraded Jordan Newman to a 3 star recruit from a 2 star. He's now also ranked as the 56th best SS DE in the country. It's about time they got to looking at him; UCLA, Mizzou, and Kansas all offered him. We got a real steal in Jordan Newman
