When are the so called "dead periods" - and how are they different from "quiet periods"?

Does this weekend fall under one of those categories? Or are there going to be recruits in town before the big second weekend in January?

Joe Sturdivant is among the players coming in next weekend (1/3-1/5).

If I'm not mistaken, schools are allowed no contact with players during dead periods, and coaches can talk by phone with players during quiet periods, but there may be no personal visits, on campus or in the players' homes.

Can anyone confirm this?
