The Great Cedric Cofer Mystery

Postby Stallion » Tue Jan 07, 2003 2:46 pm

....The editor of Big 12 Recruiting finally responded on that inquiry I made last week re Cofer. He ain't considering SMU. His only offer is from New Mexico but he still is visiting Kansas St and Arizona. Stallion smells some kind of Academic issue or problem because these three schools can usually be found trolling around looking for these types of players. Another thing that makes me su****ious is that his first visit is only about 10 days before signing date. He might have had to take a late SAT/ACT test or something. 90% of all scholarship should be gone by that date.

Sounds like you're on the right track, Stallion. Thanks for the update.
Hope Cofer does well - as long as he doesn't end up with one of our opponents.

Which begs the question, who are we going for at DT now?

We have backed off, as have others, because of his injury to his leg. during htis down time, Cofer has "ballooned" to 330 lbs. and coaches are uncertain about his recovery. Simple as that. Believe me, as bad as schools need DT's....Cofer would get a good look should he be able.

How about we take him as a walk-on (if we can talk him into it) and then if he pans out, put him on scholarship next year.

....yeah Mr. and Mrs Cofer will you pay $25,000(or whatever the tuition is these days) so your son Cedric might get a scholarship next year to SMU rather than get a free ride to the other BCS schools recruiting your son. If Bennett can sell Mr. and Mrs. Cofer on that one then he might be a better "used car salesman" than Ron Meyer who incidentally had the best walkon in SMU history-Wes Hopkins. This is a subtle advantage which schools like Tech and Nebraska and even UT have used to advantage. UT got a commitment from the twin brother of its recruit Michael Griffin and the twin had several pretty good Division 1 offers.

I'm amazed SMU has ANY walk-ons, given the costs associated with attending our school. I agree it's totally unrealistic to expect anyone to walk-on for dear ole SMU.

Meanwhile, I hope Walker can step up this year or we can find an Adami clone somewhere on the roster.

Actually, the rumors I've heard about the walk-on brigade at SMU are encouraging. In years past, Cavan would have what .... 2? 3?

There are some folks (within the football program) who have said Coach Bennett could have between 20 and 30 next year. Not that they'll all turn out to be Wes Hopkins clones (hmmm, think we could use an NFL-bound safety right about now?) but maybe a few of them will turn into real players.

Sure beats having as few as we've had in the past. Other than Brian Bischoff, who's the last walk-on to make a difference at SMU?
