FG kicker

Postby Nacho » Wed Jan 08, 2003 3:35 pm

Are we recruiting a scholarship kicker or do we plan on bringing in a guy(s) as a walk-on? True that SMU is an expensive school but for guys in financial need things can be worked out in the financial aid department so that finances shouldn't be a problem.

I always thought that the general rule was that if a walkon actually played in games, he would be given a scholarship. Is that not true? Do good walkons actually play in games for several years without ever getting a scholarship?
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

A lot of coaches follow that practice, although they're not obligated to.
Coach Bennett is a very loyal man, and if a walk-on deserves a scholarship, Coach will figure out a way to take care of him.

Unless a HS all-America PK falls into our lap, I don't think Bennett should offer another kicker. We already have three (including Mentzel) on scholarship. Let's not burn another scholarship. Maybe we can get Ryan Wolcott (HP kicker, Doak's grandson) to walk on.

Wolcott is a four-star kicker... i can't see him walking on anywhere when he could probably get a scholarship anywhere else he wants to go.

With as much trouble as we've had scoring touchdowns and kicking field goals from outside the 10 yard line, a weapon like wolcott would/should be a welcome addition to SMU...

how hard are we pursuing this kid? anyone have any insight?
