2009 SMU Recruit goes to the ToadsAccording to ESPN, "Trinity Valley Community College (Athens, Texas) cornerback Keivon Gamble has signed with TCU. He will enroll in January and participate in Spring practice. He originally signed with SMU as a two-star prospect in 2009 out of Lincoln High School."
I'm not sure whey he didn't attend SMU but would assume it was for academic reasons. It's unfortunate that we have been losing recruits lately and disappointing to see that the efforts from old recruiting processes turn out like this.
Re: 2009 SMU Recruit goes to the Toadshe picked TCU-I don't think there is any basis for assuming he couldn't get into SMU other than he already flunked out of SMU. Those old tired excuses need to be reexamined. I don't know how much clearer it could be that the facts show that we can get "just about" any one into this school. We damn sure have shown we can get into school handfuls of JUCOs who were even non-qualifiers out of high school.

Re: 2009 SMU Recruit goes to the Toads
The main point is that it's disappointing to lose someone we had recruited. Whether he flunked out or not, the fact is he got his grades in order and will now be playing for our main football rivals.
Re: 2009 SMU Recruit goes to the ToadsNo that was prior to the 2011 season-about 10 posters keep misinterpreting that story. It meant he couldn't get his academics in order to get back into SMU for the 2011 season after flunking out. BUT he didn't have his academics in order to get into ANY OTHER SCHOOLsfor the 2011 season either. TCU has signed him for the 2012 season not 2011 season. Obviously he didn't qualify to transfer for 2011 season. The fact he flunked out from SMU means he had to improve his transcript to be eligible

Re: 2009 SMU Recruit goes to the ToadsHere's the NCAA Rule for a 4-2-4 graduate who was a full qualifier out of high school(ie a player transferring from a Division 1A 4 year school-then a 2 year school and back to a 4 year Division 1A school:
1) Complete an average of 12 semester or 12 quarter transferable degree credit hours for each term of full time attendance 2) Earn a GPA of 2.000 in those transferable hours 3)GRADUATE FROM THE 2 YEAR SCHOOL AND have one calandar year elapse since you last left your previous four year school * also comply with NCAA progress toward degree requirements *Gamble did not graduate from JUCO before the 2011 since he went back to the JUCO and played the 2011 season. He now has graduated or else he couldn't be a mid-term TCU signee. (Update)*OK I've read the TCU article-I was referring to an SMU article at the start of Fall practice in August about Gamble-but note it doesn't say anywhere that he was denied admission-looks like SMU moved on to another prospect. The key is that he could get into SMU, TCU or whoever once he got the AA Junior College Degree. We've let in handfuls who had worse transcripts out of high school. Re: 2009 SMU Recruit goes to the ToadsThe article I was actually referring to was a Scout article on January 28, 2011 immediately before the February signing date. He wanted to resign with SMU on the February signing date but he couldn't be admitted because he was not NCAA qualified under the above 4-2-4 rule because he had not graduated with an AA JC degree-something he admits he didn't do until very late after summer school later that year. Basically he didn't get in because he was, a very very late qualifier. I'd estimate that about 65% of the quality JUCOs sign at midterm, about 25% sign on the regular signing date and Gamble was in a third small category that go all the way through summer school to qualify. SMU moved on with Lazzari Middleton-from Nebraska-it will be interesting to if Gamble contributes more to TCU than Middleton does for SMU

Re: 2009 SMU Recruit goes to the ToadsWe had a spot for him in this 2012 Class-either he was pissed at SMU or we didn't offered. Looks like instead we are fighting it out for a new high school CB trying to decide between Eastern Washington and New Mexico

Re: 2009 SMU Recruit goes to the Toads
Wasn't Gamble all-conference in JC? I'll take that any day of the week. Talent is talent "I love coaching here at SMU University" -June Jones

Sure some can go way pass their designation of two stars, but I believe a majority of kids below the 3 star ranking typically arent very good. Either way just extremely frustrated how we went from top 50 recruiting class to a bottom 50.

Kudos to our great coach JJ for the big drop in ratings and loss of recruits. GO PONIES!!!
Re: 2009 SMU Recruit goes to the ToadsHe's a 3 star 5.6 last time I looked on Rivals

Re: 2009 SMU Recruit goes to the ToadsHe was a rivals 2 star out of high school and is now a rivals 3 star out of juco. Either more grade inflation or he really improved. I am guessing that he improved based on his juco accolades.
Re: 2009 SMU Recruit goes to the ToadsHe was well regarded as a player before he flunked out of SMU...
Look, could it just be that the guy flunked out of here once and didn't want to come back and revisit the pain? I don't know if I would be able to handle coming back into that type of situation. Too bad we didn't get him back, because I think he is a good player. But I certainly understand wanting to start over...

I don't think I need any further proof than that. "We hung with them until the game got out of hand." -DanFreibergerForHeisman
