Thanks folks,
Basically I want to be in a spot that is easily accessible to both the SMU campus and American Airlines Arena. Any help would be welcome.

Anything you ask will get answered by about 25 people on here. Feel free to ask anything.

Most of the lodging in downtown Dallas is within walking distance of the American Airlines Center, and 10 minute drive to the SMU campus.

This. And this is one of the added benefits to being on SMU! Tell your friends.

If you stay downtown, you can walk or train to AAC and train to SMU. Won't even need a car! Take the trolley to uptown for the nighttime sightseeing. Take your picture in the middle of the street where a president was shot.
Adolphus or Magnolia for a cheaper, nice hotel in the middle of downtown. Joule for a cool boutique place.
The Sheraton is ok, too. Aloft as well.
